Project Profile:As one of the busiest stretches of roadway in Alberta, Highway 1 approaching Banff National Park has been a hot spot for wildlife vehicle collisions (WVCs). Large animals such as deer, elk and bears have been victims of WVCs, along with the drivers of the vehicles. In 2018, Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors engaged DIALOG with the goal of dramatically reducing WVCs in the Bow Valley Corridor while maintaining critical animal migration routes and connectivity. The outcome was the design and construction of the first wildlife overpass in Canada that exists outside of a National Park. In this presentation, you’ll get an in-depth look at the project design and construction, which includes 12 km of wildlife fencing to keep wildlife away from vehicles and funnel them to the overpass, a series of “jump outs” to allow animals who enter the right-of-way to exit safely, and other design innovations.Presenters:Graeme Johnston, P.Eng., M.Sc.Graeme is a young and enthusiastic structural engineer at DIALOG with experience focused mainly on bridge design and rehabilitation, retaining wall structures, and structural steel design.Graeme received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Western Ontario in 2012 and a Master’s degree from the University of Alberta in 2015, having completed a thesis on the strength and behaviour of steel connections. Graeme is a registered Professional Engineer with APEGA and a member of the CSA S6 Technical Committee on Steel Structures.Prior to joining DIALOG, Graeme worked as a connection design engineer for a steel fabricator. He has worked as a project engineer on several bridge projects including the Groat Road Bridge, Walterdale Bridge, and 142 Street Pedestrian/Cyclist Bridge in Edmonton, AB, the Highway 40 Wapiti River Bridge in Grande Prairie, AB, and on the Highway 1 Wildlife Overpass near Canmore, AB.Neil Robson, P.Eng., M.Eng.Neil is a Partner at DIALOG and leader of their bridge and civil infrastructure team. Proudly born and raised in Edmonton, he has worked on a wide variety of institutional and community-building infrastructure projects in the city and northern Alberta over the past 20 years. An experienced project manager, Neil provides leadership and direction to large multi-disciplinary teams and prides himself on professionalism and integrity when collaborating with all colleagues. He has a long track record of successfully delivering transportation and infrastructure projects on time and budget for Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors, the City of Edmonton, and the City of Calgary.
