The Partnership for Women’s Health Research Canada (PWHR) is led by institutions that share a vision of “Better health for all women, trans and non-binary people through research equity, excellence, and inclusion”.PWHR’s partner institutions bring together more than 775 women’s health researchers who address health issues across the lifespan and come from diverse disciplinary perspectives. Annually, our researchers mentor more than 1300 trainees, ranging from undergraduates to postdoctoral and clinical fellows.PWHR’s partner institutions support multidisciplinary women’s health research, spanning the continuum from basic science to clinical science to epidemiology, health systems, policy and community-based participatory research. In addition to the strong representation of women’s health researchers from public health, health services research and the biological and clinical sciences, we include social scientists, historians and engineers.In all our work, we are committed to ongoing learning and practicing humility to establish mutually respectful relationships and to advance research that values the lived experiences, knowledge systems and priorities of diverse women, trans and non-binary people, particularly those who have been systemically and historically excluded in health care and health science career trajectories.

Join the Partnership for Women's Health Research Canada to learn about digital health innovations that empower women across the lifespan

<p>On March 1st, PWHR will host <strong><strong>Digital Innovations: Expanding women’s informed choice and access to quality healthcare.</strong></strong> The event will be chaired by Dr. Ibukun Abejirinde, an expert on promoting equity in digital platforms and virtual care, and feature three leaders in digital women’s health research and their trainees: Dr. Carla Prado and Camila Orsso (Women and Children’s Health Research Institute, Edmonton), Dr. Gina Ogilvie and Nadia Mithani (Women’s Health Research Institute, Vancouver), and Dr. Simone Vigod and Neesha Hussain-Shamsy (Women’s College Research Institute, Toronto).</p><p>Presentations will highlight digital innovations that empower women across the lifespan: perinatal mental health, cervical cancer screening, and chronic disease prevention and treatment.</p><p>PWHR invites everyone who is interested in women's health research (researchers, trainees, policymakers, and healthcare providers) to attend this free national event.</p>

<h3>Meet Our Speakers</h3><p><br></p><h3>Dr. Ibukun Abejirinde, MD, MSc, PhD</h3><p><strong><strong>Scientist, Women's College Hospital Research Institute, Assistant Professor, Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto</strong></strong></p><p><em><strong><strong>Seminar Chair</strong></strong></em></p><p>A trained physician, with a PhD in global health, Dr. Abejirinde is an implementation and evaluation scientist whose work focuses on innovative, digitally enabled models of healthcare, specifically as it concerns their implications for health equity and health system strengthening. Her research applies a trans-disciplinary approach that is anchored in community/patient partnerships and lies at the nexus of systems thinking, theory-driven inquiry and implementation science. By answering questions on “what works, for whom, in which contexts, how and why?” Dr. Abejirinde’s research program focuses on understanding and enabling the role of digital technologies in the ecosystem of health system strengthening in Canada and in low- and middle-income countries. Leveraging her networks and expertise in global health, she collaborates with colleagues and organisations from diverse spheres of influence to push the boundaries of research and learning on digital health systems.</p><p><br></p><h3><br></h3><h3><strong><strong>Innovations in treatment delivery for perinatal mental illness</strong></strong></h3><h4>Dr. Simone Vigod, MD, MSc, FRCPC</h4><p><em><em>Senior Scientist, Women’s College Research Institute, Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, University of Toronto</em></em></p><p>Dr. Vigod is a leading expert in perinatal mood disorders and has conducted some of the largest studies worldwide on maternal mental illness around the time of pregnancy. Mental illness at this life stage poses unique risks to mothers and their children at a critical juncture in both of their lives. Dr. Vigod’s research is helping raise awareness about gaps in access to specialized perinatal mental healthcare, as well as identifying vulnerable populations where these gaps are most prominent.Working with a multidisciplinary network of research, content experts, front-line workers and women with lived experience, Dr. Vigod is leveraging digital technologies to achieve this goal by optimizing maternal mental healthcare delivery. One of these interventions, Mother Matters, a therapist-facilitated online postpartum mental health support group has already been implemented across Ontario.Dr. Vigod’s research has also provided valuable insight into balancing the importance of maternal mental health and the risk of medication to the fetus. She’s also developed an online patient decision aid to help women make choices about antidepressant use in pregnancy that is now being evaluated in the United Kingdom.</p><h4><br></h4><h4>Neesha Hussain-Shamsy</h4><p>Neesha Hussain-Shamsy is a PhD Candidate in Health Services Research (Health Informatics Stream) at the University of Toronto’s Institute for Health Policy, Management and Evaluation. Her research interest is in the use of virtual care to deliver quality, effective mental health care, particularly to those who are pregnant or postpartum. She obtained her Master’s degree in Mental Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and has worked at SickKids and Women’s College Hospital in Toronto, as well as internationally.</p><p><br></p><h3>Leveraging digital platforms to improve cervical cancer screening rates</h3><h4>Dr. Gina Ogilvie, MD, MSc, FCFP, DrPH</h4><p><em><em>Professor, School of Population and Public Health, University of </em></em><em><em>British Columbia, Senior Scientist BC Centre for Disease Control, Senior Scientific Advisor Women’s </em></em><em><em>Health Research Institute</em></em></p><p>Dr. Ogilvie is a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Global Control of HPV related diseases and prevention. She is also Senior Public Health Scientist at BC Centre for Disease Control and Senior Research Advisor at the BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre. Dr. Ogilvie is principal investigator on over 5 million dollars in research grants and has received funding from PHAC, CIHR, Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research, Canadian Foundation for Innovation and private foundations.</p><p>Her research is focused on both the public health and clinical aspects of reproductive health, sexually transmitted infections, HPV screening and the HPV vaccine, and her findings have been highly influential` in setting and directing health policy both in Canada and globally. Among other research projects, she is principal investigator for the ASPIRE program. She has published over 130 peer reviewed manuscripts and has provided advice and consultation to national and global institutions.</p><p><br></p><h4>Nadia Mithani</h4><p>Nadia Mithani is currently a PhD student at the University of British Columbia in the School of Population and Public Health. Under the supervision of Dr. Gina Ogilvie, her research focuses on the acceptability and uptake of HPV-based cervical self-screening among underserved populations in BC. Nadia previously completed her Master of Public Health in Global Health at Simon Fraser University, and has several years of experience managing projects related to nutrition, obesity, tobacco control, HIV/AIDS and water and sanitation in Canada, Uganda, Jordan and India.</p><p><br></p><h3>Empowering women's choices to manage chronic conditions using innovative multimodal digital solutions</h3><h4>Dr. Carla Prado, RD, PhD</h4><p><em><em>Professor, Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Science, University </em></em><em><em>of Alberta, Member Women and Children’s Health Research Institute</em></em></p><p>Dr. Carla Prado is a Professor at the University of Alberta, and a Campus Alberta Innovates (CAIP) Chair in Nutrition, Food and Health. She is the Director of the Human Nutrition Research Unit, one of the top research and training facilities for body composition and energy metabolism assessments worldwide. Carla is an expert in assessing nutritional status through the precise measurement of body composition and energy metabolism. She is an Associate Editor of three top journals in her field and a member of several international guideline groups. Dr. Prado is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, and a member of the Royal Society of Canada College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists – these are two of the highest academic honors in her country. She has also been acknowledged in the list of Most Powerful Women in Canada: Top 100.</p><p><br></p><h4>Camila Orsso</h4><p>Camila Orsso is a doctoral student in Nutrition and Metabolism at the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science, University of Alberta. She has a BSc in Physical Education and a MSc in Nutrition and Metabolism. Camila’s efforts have focused on improving people’s physical activity and nutrition to support optimal body composition, health, and well-being. Throughout her research training, she gained first-hand experience in conducting exercise and nutrition studies. She is now investigating the efficacy of multimodal and digital interventions to improve the health of individuals at risk of developing cancer and those who have survived endometrial cancer. Camila's work is advancing knowledge in various areas of nutrition. She is an expert member of provincial and international working groups related to nutritional assessments and methodological standards.</p>
