WORKSHOP: WRITING with Jessica Lynne

What tasks do we assign to the work of (art) criticism? What exactly does it hold? What does it mean to respond to continuums and lineages, chart paths of revision and expansion, and take up archival care and recovery as frameworks, if at all?
These questions are not new or contemporary. They exist inside traditions of writing put forth and shaped by Black critics in response to landscapes of cultural production for decades and embodied in publications such as Small Axe or The Black Scholar and in the varied writings of individuals such as Sylvia Wynter, bell hooks, M. NourbeSe Phillip, or Margo Jefferson. 
For this workshop, we will write a response that takes up a proposition/argument/manifesto previously put forth by a Black critic. This could be one of the many whose thinking undergirds the symposium itself. It could be another for whom the participant finds captivating, frustrating, or is curious about. This task is connected to the questions posed above just as it is connected to the terms on which Black folks create the languages and frames necessary for our expression and survival. 
 
Jessica Lynne is a writer and art critic. She is a founding editor of ARTS.BLACK, an online journal of art criticism from Black perspectives.
