WORKSHOP: AESTHETICS OF BLACK PERFORMANCE AND SOUND with Steffani Jemison

In 1974, Huey P. Newton wrote, “There is an old African saying, 'I am we.' If you met an African in ancient times and asked him who he was, he would reply, “I am we.” This is revolutionary suicide: I, we, all of us are the one and the multitude. The difference lies in hope and desire. By hoping and desiring, the revolutionary suicide chooses life; he is, in the words of Nietzsche, “an arrow of longing for another shore.”” Newton wrote, "the revolutionary suicide is a “fool,” a fool for the revolution in the way that Paul meant when he spoke of being “a fool for Christ.” What foolishness can move the mountain of oppression; it is our great leap and our commitment to the dead and the unborn." In this workshop, we will ask: Are we foolish enough? If foolishness is a signal of hope, why does it look and feel like failure? Are we doing enough to weaponize our desire? Could the weaponization of political desire be called black utopia? We will also ask: What does it mean to come after? How can we create space to imagine what is to come? This is a movement and writing-based workshop  open to people of all physical and intellectual abilities and disabilities. Please bring a notebook and something to write with.
