Her stunning professional and personal comeback is the stuff of legend, and her classic songs, from "Proud Mary" to "What's Love Got To Do With It" still resonate today.Dr. Mike Daley Presents: The Tina Turner Story is a lecture-concert combining 'unplugged' renditions of Tina's classic hit songs with Dr. Mike's fascinating story of her life and career. Along with Mike's narration, guitar and vocals, Selena Evangeline sings lead, Jill Daley contributes piano and violin, Greg Wyard sings and plays bass, and Marty Morin joins in on percussion.One of the most dynamic performers in the history of popular music, Tina Turner was a powerhouse vocalist who won and lost fame in the 1960s and '70s before a spectacular comeback in the '80s made her an enduring superstar. She first made her name as an R&amp;B shouter performing with her first husband, Ike Turner. Ike &amp; Tina crossed over to the pop audience with their raucous cover of "Proud Mary," but their rising stardom came as Ike fell into drug addiction and spousal abuse. In 1976, Tina left Ike and went solo, and after years of struggle and reinvention, she struck gold with 1984's Private Dancer, which blended her fiery but versatile vocals with up-to-date production and became a multi-platinum success on the strength of the hit singles "What's Love Got to Do with It," "Better Be Good to Me," and the title track. Subsequent international touring reinforced her successful return to the spotlight and she would be a frequent visitor to the sales charts and a top live attraction through the rest of her career. Tina proved she was still a draw even after retirement, thanks to a successful jukebox musical based on her life and music.The latest in a monthly series that has included sold-out lecture-concerts on Simon and Garfunkel, Carole King, the Beatles and Gordon Lightfoot, Dr. Mike Daley Presents: The Tina Turner Story is a must-see for any music fan.Dr. Mike Daley is a musician and music historian known across the GTA for his highly entertaining and informative talks on popular music. Selena Evangeline is a spectacular singer and guitarist with a long list of touring and recording credits. Jill Daley is a full-time musician at Canada's National Ballet School and, like Mike, is part of the music staff at Redeemer. Greg Wyard is a respected Toronto bassist with several original albums to his credit and a strong following as the GTA's premier solo singer/guitarist. Marty Morin is a veteran drummer and percussionist with acts like Goddo, Klaatu, Wireless and many more.Church of the Redeemer is a spacious and comfortable (cushioned chairs, not pews)1879 church with excellent sightlines and acoustics. It is conveniently located in Yorkville, close to Bay and Museum subway stations, ample parking and fine restaurants.General admission tickets are $30.00 plus HST and fees.
