9:45 am: Register in the Museum10:00 am: Session Begins11:00 am: Coffee in Galleries11:30: Q&amp;ATalk Abstract: Canada is marked by multiple forms of diversity, including ethnoracial diversity and has chosen to embrace diversity rather than consider it a problem. But diversity is not neutral let alone equitable. Rather, we need to work towards social justice and equity between various races and ethnicities. In this talk I speak to the options we have and ultimately the best way to address diversity issues such that they work for the making of equity, inclusion and social justice in local community and national society in general and in education and personal pedagogy in particular. In Canada and in British Columbia multiculturalism has long been the dominant discourse we use to address diversity and in education this has meant liberal multicultural education. However, there are a number of related and alternative frameworks to multiculturalism and multicultural education (e.g. anti-racism, decoloniality, human rights, etc.). Anti-racism in particular has been argued by some to hold much better promise to make for more effective social justice education. In the talk I lay out the characteristics and pros and cons of multiculturalism and multicultural education on the one hand and anti-racism and anti-racist education on the other. I point to what social justice education, especially one based on anti-racism, might look like and what its manifestation means- at the level of institutions such as schools and museums and at the individual level of curators’ and teachers’ politics and pedagogy.Please Note : This presentation will be held on a 1921 train car, that has 4 steps into it. He is also Senior Research Associate, Department of Communications Studies, University of Johannesburg.He is co-editor of the book series African and Diasporic Cultural Studies (University of Toronto Press) and Associate Editor of the journal Critical Arts and serves on the editorial board of several cultural studies and education journals and book series. Prof. Wright has published extensively on continental and diasporic African cultural studies, cultural studies of education, anti-racism, multiculturalism and qualitative research.His publications include authorship of A Prescience of African Cultural Studies (Peter Lang, 2004) and co-editorship of Precarious International Multicultural Education (Sense, 2012); The Promised Land: History and Historiography of the Black Experience in Chatham-Kent and Beyond (University of Toronto, 2014) and The Nuances of Blackness in the Canadian Academy (University of Toronto Press, 2021). His work in progress includes a co-edited book on Black British Columbia (Fernwood, forthcoming) and An Anthology of African Cultural Studies (Routledge, forthcoming). Wright’s community engagement includes service on the Mayor of Vancouver’s Advisory on Black History Month and City of Vancouver’s External Advisory on Equity and Diversity and membership on the BC Ministry of Education and Child Care’s Roundtable on Anti-racism Education.
