Black History Month offers an opportunity to recognize and honour the contributions, legacy, and aspirations of black people in Canada. This year, SFU will celebrate Black History Month under the theme Building Connections for Black Flourishing. Visit SFU's <a href="https://www.sfu.ca/edi/updates/news/2024/black-history-month-2024.html" title="https://www.sfu.ca/edi/updates/news/2024/black-history-month-2024.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Black History Month</a> web page for other events celebrating Black History Month across the university.<h4>Speaker</h4>Honourable Dr. Jean Augustine P.C., C.M., O.Ont, C.B.E.Jean Augustine immigrated to Canada in 1960 and worked as a nanny, teacher, principal, and later chair of the Metro Toronto Housing Authority while raising two girls.In 1993, she became the first Black Woman elected to the Parliament of Canada, Cabinet Minister and Deputy Speaker – championing the historic Black History Month and Famous Five motions.A member of the Order of Canada and Order of Ontario, she is founder of the Centre for Young Women's Empowerment and The Chair in Education, Community and Diaspora at York University. She supports post-secondary scholarships at George Brown, Centennial and Humber College. She is a senior fellow at Massey College and Centennial College.(<a href="http://www.JeanAugustine.ca" title="http://www.JeanAugustine.ca" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">www.JeanAugustine.ca</a>)<h4>Moderator</h4>Dr. Yabome Gilpin-Jackson is an award-winning organizational development leader and scholar who centres equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in all she does. Throughout her career, which has spanned the public, private, and non-profit sectors, she has helped people and organizations build capacity for transformational change to advance EDI and belonging in workplaces and society. Currently, Yabome is SFU's<a href="https://www.sfu.ca/pres/the-president/statements/2022/dr-yabome-gilpin-jackson-named-vice-president-people-equity-inclusion.html" title="https://www.sfu.ca/pres/the-president/statements/2022/dr-yabome-gilpin-jackson-named-vice-president-people-equity-inclusion.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> Vice President, People, Equity, and Inclusion</a>.Previously, Yabome served as the Chief People Officer for the British Columbia Lotteries Corporation, Executive Director of Organizational Development for Fraser Health, and Regional Lead of Organizational Development for Vancouver Coastal Health, as well as a leader of several provincial leadership development and engagement healthcare committees.
