ABOUT THE EVENT - Surrey Rocks! is a community fundraiser concert featuring talented young musicians, artists, DJs, performers and community organizers from across the Lower Mainland. We invite musicians, music-lovers, and community members of all ages to join us for an evening full of fun, great music, delicious food, and community-building. The event is co-organized by <a href="https://www.solidstate.coop/" title="https://www.solidstate.coop/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Solid State Community Industries</a> and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/stickykeys.music/" title="https://www.instagram.com/stickykeys.music/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">StickyKeys Music</a> with the aim to raise funds to send Surrey-based youth leaders on an educational field trip to Mondragon, Spain to learn how solidarity economics works at scale and bring back ideas to strengthen their local community. ACTIVITIES - Surrey Rocks! is an event you won't want to miss! A limited number of spots are open to all on a first-come-first-served basis, and all kinds of performances are welcome (music, rap, spoken word, dance, etc.), though we will prioritize giving the stage to those who face barriers of access to mainstream performance opportunities. This is a paid opportunity - all performers will earn 25% of the revenue from tickets you sell, so make sure to tell your friends and family! All are welcome to apply, but priority will be given to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Person of Colour) and youth (under 35) artists, social enterprises, and co-operatives. We want to make this opportunity as accessible as possible, so we are offering booth spots on a Pay What You Can basis. ABOUT THE TRIP - This May, Solid State staff and cohort members are going on a professional development trip to visit the <a href="https://www.mondragon-corporation.com/en/about-us/" title="https://www.mondragon-corporation.com/en/about-us/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Mondragon Cooperative. </a>Mondragon is located in the Basque region of Spain, and is one of the largest and most well-known cooperative networks in the world.Through a three-day intensive series of tours, workshops and lectures, we will get to see firsthand how various Mondragon-affiliated organizations operate, challenges they have faced, and their ideas for the future. Understanding the cooperative world on an international level is an important milestone for our community and this trip will be a great step in understanding how our work at Solid State is building a solidarity economy for racialized and migrant communities in Surrey. Visiting Mondragon aligns with the Solid State mission to continue to establish resource hubs regionally, nationally, and internationally, and to learn about cooperative building at scale.
