Join us Friday, February 9th at 2:30pm in person at Bennett Library, SFU Burnaby, Room 2020, or online, for her talk “Perceptions of Inclusion and Exclusion: the Metaxas Dictatorship and Greek Antisemitism, 1936-41”. This lecture will be moderated by Assistant Professor <a href="https://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/about/people/j-horncastle.html" title="https://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/about/people/j-horncastle.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">James Horncastle</a>, Department of Global Humanities. ABSTRACTAt the end of World War II, Greece lost one of the highest percentages of Jews in Europe, with roughly 85% of the Jewish population killed during the Holocaust. The multifaceted and ancient Jewish communities disappeared from the Greek landscape, and scholars are still exploring the tragic consequences of this loss. This presentation will discuss the nature of Greek antisemitism and the manner in which the Metaxas dictatorship of 1936-1941 differentiated Jews within the Greek state, but also provided them assistance in light of foreign persecution. Overall, despite assumptions to the contrary, the 4th August Regime provided a final respite for the Jews prior to Greece’s involvement in World War II.

SPEAKER BIOKaterina Lagos is Professor of History at California State University, Sacramento and the Director of the CSUS Hellenic Studies Program and Angelo K. Tsakopoulos Hellenic Studies Center. She is the President of the Modern Greek Studies Association and member of the Modern Greek Studies Foundation, San Francisco. Her recent publications include The Fourth of August Regime and Greek Jewry, 1936-1941 (Palgrave, 2023), The Greek Military Dictatorship 1967-1974: Revisiting a Troubled Past (Berghahn, 2021), and “Nazi crimes, Max Merten and his prosecution as reflected in Greece and beyond” in the Journal of Modern European History (forthcoming, 2024).

MODERATOR BIO<a href="https://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/about/people/j-horncastle.html" title="https://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/about/people/j-horncastle.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr. Horncastle</a> joined Simon Fraser University and the SNF Centre for Hellenic Studies as the inaugural Edward and Emily McWhinney Professor in International Relations in 2019 at the rank of Assistant Professor. He is a historian of Modern Greece who completed his graduate work at the University of New Brunswick (MA in 2011) and Simon Fraser University (PhD in 2017). His current research connects the Greek Civil War and the role that conflict played in population movements in the Balkans.
