<h1>Course Description:</h1> <h4>Review of the Basics &amp; Foundations in Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy</h4>The Review of Basics course is designed to provide physiotherapists with a comprehensive review of fundamental concepts and practices in cardiorespiratory physiotherapy. This course is suitable for physiotherapists seeking to refresh their knowledge or enhance their clinical skills in the cardiorespiratory care domain. The method of delivery will be through lectures, case studies, and interactive discussions to create an engaging learning experience. Participants will have the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in case-based scenarios, fostering the development of clinical reasoning skills. Upon completion of this course, participants will:1. Gain a thorough understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.2. Develop proficiency in conducting comprehensive cardiopulmonary assessments, interpreting diagnostic tests, and formulating accurate clinical impressions.3. Review the pathophysiology of common cardiorespiratory conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart failure, and common cardiothoracic surgeries.4. Acquire case-based skills in applying evidence-based therapeutic interventions, such as breathing exercises, airway clearance techniques, and pulmonary rehabilitation exercises.5. Develop critical appraisal skills to integrate the latest research and evidence into cardiorespiratory physiotherapy practice.6. Learn to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions using key outcome measures and patient progress assessments. <h2>The Instructor:</h2> Simone Gruenig completed her Bachelor of Science at the University of Ottawa in 2000, her Master of Science in Physical Therapy and her Master of Science (research) at the University of Toronto in 2004. She has completed post-graduate work in cardiorespiratory therapy, seniors care, community therapy, trauma-informed care, and Indigenous cultural humility. Over the last eighteen years, her clinical focus has varied from critical/acute care, chronic pain/palliative care, community care and pelvic floor therapy. Since 2007 she has been working part-time for Vancouver Coastal Health and since 2015 she has been working with an outreach community health team, servicing the diverse needs of the downtown east side of Vancouver. Also, since 2007, she has held a part-time instructor position in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of British Columbia primarily instructing clinical cardiorespiratory therapy, physiology and complex patient populations. Her post-graduate teaching has focused on the evidence-based standards with the cardiorespiratory patient population, the use of outcome measures in acute care and how to build and foster your clinical reasoning skills. She received an award of excellence in teaching in 2015. She is part of numerous committees within her profession, including, but not limited to the Cardiorespiratory Division, of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association, The International Cardiorespiratory Committee, of the World Physiotherapy Association, the Public Practice Advisory Committee of the Physical Therapy Association of British Columbia and the Initiatives for Indigenous Advocacy Committee, University of British Columbia.
