Join us Friday, March 1st at 2:30pm in person at Bennett Library, SFU Burnaby, Room 2020, or online, for her talk “The Importance of Archaeological Microhistories: A Medieval Case Study from the Anatolian Plateau”. This lecture will be moderated by Professor <a href="https://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/humans/people/d-krallis.html" title="https://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/humans/people/d-krallis.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dimitris Krallis</a>, Director of the SNF Centre for Hellenic Studies at SFU. AbstractThe site of Çadır Höyük is located on the Anatolian Plateau in Yozgat province, Turkey. It is a small site, representative of the kind of communities which stretched across central Anatolia during the medieval period. While these are largely unknown from the written sources, and ignored in relation to the history of empires and battles, it is these small sites that help us to understand continuity and change in small communities throughout the medieval world. By using Çadır Höyük as a window onto the evolution of a medieval communities in Anatolia (as opposed to representatives of empire), we gain a better sense of the lives and homes of the ordinary people who made up the majority of the region.

Speaker Biography<a href="https://profiles.ucalgary.ca/marica-cassis" title="https://profiles.ucalgary.ca/marica-cassis" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Marica Cassis</a> is an Associate Professor in the Department of Classics and Religion at the University of Calgary. She specializes in Byzantine and Syriac archaeology, and received her Ph.D. from the Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations at the University of Toronto. She currently directs the Byzantine excavations at Çadır Höyük, which has had recent support from a SSHRC Insight grant, and has worked at the site since 2004. Publications on the site include “Çadır Höyük” in Archaeology of Byzantine Anatolia, ed. Philipp Niewöhner (Oxford University Press, 2017, pp. 368-374). Her current projects include a book on Byzantine archaeology under contract with Arc Humanities Press, as well as two forthcoming articles on gender theory and Byzantine archaeology.

Moderator BiographyBorn and raised in Athens, <a href="https://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/about/people/d-krallis.html" title="https://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/about/people/d-krallis.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dimitris Krallis</a> studied political theory at the University of Athens and Byzantine History at Oxford and at the University of Michigan. He teaches Byzantine history at Simon Fraser University’s Department of Global Humanities and is the Director of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies. His research explores the social, political, economic and intellectual history of Byzantium, as well as its modern reception.
