AbstractThucydides’ excursus on the Tyrant-Slayers (6.54-57) is one of the most controversial passages in his history. In it, he recounts the assassination of Hipparchos, the son of the Athenian tyrant Peisistratos, in 514 BCE. The passage is unusual in Thucydides for its highly dramatic character, but also because of Thucydides’ intensity in arguing against the “popular” conceptions that Hipparchos was tyrant when murdered and that the tyrant-slayers were politically motivated. The focus of this presentation will be primarily on what Thucydides says about Hipparchos’ power and status and what he says about the motivation of the tyrannicides. Both fundamentally affect the historical content of the narrative, but also Thucydides’ argument about the tyrannicide.

Speaker Biography<a href="https://www.luc.edu/peace/facultyadvisoryboard/lavellebrian.shtml" title="https://www.luc.edu/peace/facultyadvisoryboard/lavellebrian.shtml" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Brian Lavelle </a>received a BA in Classical Studies from the University of California, San Diego, an MA in Classics from the University of California, Davis, and a PhD in Classics from the University of British Columbia.He is emeritus professor in Classical Studies at Loyola University Chicago. He has published several articles and two books on the subject of Athenian tyranny and, more recently, an introduction to the history and civilization of Archaic Greece. He is working to finish a further book on Athenian tyranny focusing on the period after the death of Peisistratos.

Moderator Biography<a href="https://trk.cp20.com/click/ds9u-2qyn4b-ctsey2-cocw1z81/" title="https://trk.cp20.com/click/ds9u-2qyn4b-ctsey2-cocw1z81/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">David Mirhady</a>'s research spans several related fields: Greek rhetoric, law, and the school of Aristotle. It began with a dissertation on the political and legal writings of Aristotle's student Theophrastus. In order to get a background for that, he looked at Aristotle's approach to legal argumentation in his Rhetoric, which led to articles on the parallel accounts of argumentation on documentary forms of evidence in the Rhetoric, its contemporary, the Rhetoric to Alexander, and in the Athenian orators, the speeches of one of whom, Isocrates, he translated. He has also continued his interests in the parallels between the Rhetoric and the Rhetoric to Alexander, which led to a Loeb translation of the latter.
