Drone Day is an annual celebration of drone, community, and experimental sounds open to experienced and beginner sound-makers.

We invite artists and sound-makers of all kinds to join us in celebrating this international day of drone! Drone Day is an annual global celebration of drone, community and experimental sounds. This year, Debaser and Carleton University Art Gallery are co-presenting a special edition of Ottawa Drone Day at Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre (CDCC), a heritage building in Centretown, not far from Parliament Hill. It reflects on the question, “what is our relationship to this land?” Taking place in CDCC’s vaulted performance hall, Drone Day is a participatory program that invites experienced and beginner sound-makers to add their voices to a heterogenous yet unified hum. It requests listening as much as inviting sounding. We’ll take our cues from Pauline Oliveros’ ideas of deep listening as activism and Dylan Robinson’s concept of hungry listening. This decentralized program of organized sound elevates group consciousness while honouring individual contributions on their own terms. Conceived together, drone is a healing and socializing agent. Then, sink into the 8-hour drone program featuring international sound artists Anjeline de Dios and Andy Slater, renowned composers/improvisers Olivia Shortt, Anne Bourne, and ZOMA, and a host of local artists and experimenters.&nbsp;&nbsp; <h4>Get Involved</h4>There are 2 participatory activities:&nbsp; 12-1 pm - Gathering in the Garden with Anne BourneExplore a series of Oliveros’ seed improvisation techniques including the Tuning Meditation, to improvise a sound field together. Participants will be invited back to contribute to Anne’s piece DIVERS at 5:44 pm 6-6:40pm - Group DroneSound-makers of all kinds welcome! <h3>About the Artists and Presentations</h3>in order of appearance

<h4>Anne Bourne</h4> Artist/ composer, mentor. Seasoned in international intermedia performance, recording and installation, Anne composes electroacoustic multi spatial, sound fields, from improvised microtonal cello, voice, and field recordings. Honouring the more than human, the celestial and the elemental world. Anne imparts the sonic scores and listening practices of Pauline Oliveros independently, and as faculty Center for Deep Listening, Rensselaer, NY. Anne is writing a long form work integrating her ancestry in China, and composing text scores under the Soundfield Memory Restoration Project. Chalmer’s fellow, Anne’s listening walks engage symbiotic listening. She offers listening and sonic orientation gatherings , and composes in attunement to water. Gathering at noon in the garden weather permitting or inside before the drone begins Anne Bourne will prepare the chorus (all voices welcome) and group drone players, with a series of Oliveros' seed improvisation techniques including the Tuning Meditation, to improvise a sound field together. <h4>ignoble marmalade</h4> ignoble marmalade is the deeply personal creative outlet of musician/producer/technician Dana Wiesbrock. Beneath the murk of sporadic releases and infrequent live performances lurks a passionate artist with a deep desire for peace and connection.

<h4>LSD Trio</h4> LSD Trio is Linsey Wellman on baritone saxophone, pedals, Scott Warren, tape loops, electronics, percussion and David Jackson on guitar, modular synth, laptop. Coming together over the pandemic, LSD trio spent nights getting together online to play together in real time. We recorded our album one warm autumn afternoon outside at the Quyon Church Studio with Michael Dubue (Hilotrons, Empircals, Socalled) by a graveyard. We mic'd plants, captured the wind, and created five tracks of improvised ambience and released it November 2023. The instrumental configuration for shows is always changing and always improvised. Primarily though this involves instruments being highly processed in real time with pedals, software, and tape, often resulting in large looped noisy ambiences that shift into funky jaggy instrumental rock. Political ambient noise junk.

<h4>Anjeline de Dios</h4> Anjeline de Dios is a musician, researcher, and teacher from Manila, Philippines. Her sound practice explores themes of identity and healing in transnational spaces of art, popular culture, and meditation. She was recently selected for the Goethe Institut-Southeast Asia’s REFLEKT Residency Programme 2023 at SAVVY Contemporary.

<h4>Olivia Shortt</h4> (They/He/She - only if used in rotation, otherwise ‘They’// Anishinaabe, Nipissing First Nation // ireland + canada) Olivia Shortt is a weirdo, noisemaker, video artist, wannabe fashion icon, curator, and troublemaker. Shortt's work is inspired by their love of camp, drag, and gender expression and its relation to Indigeneity. Shortt was featured in the 2020 Winter edition of Musicworks Magazine. Highlights include Shortt’s world premiere performance of ‘For Olivia Shortt’ by Pulitzer Prize Diné composer Raven Chacon (as part of Chacon’s series ‘For Zitkala-Ša’ featured at The 2022 Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, NYC); their Lincoln Center (NYC) debut playing percussion in 2018 with the International Contemporary Ensemble (Shortt is NOT a percussionist FYI); their film debut in Atom Egoyan’s 2019 film ‘Guest of Honour’; recording an album of Robert Lemay’s music two kilometres underground in the SnoLAB, a Neutrino laboratory in Sudbury, Canada; and performances of Raven Chacon’s music at The Holland Festival in Amsterdam and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian (Washington, DC).

<h4>Crhunchy!</h4> Crhunchy! is an audiovisual project as an outlet for my buffoonery with media compression and noise generation. Instead of attempting to purify sound, which tends towards what is no longer of us, I am interested in compressing what we actually have, and often that causes it to distort and lose shape. I think the medium should show signs of decay, as though it might eventually turn into dust just as we do. Often there are corresponding visuals to my work that I screen on cathode-ray tube TVs, which keeps them crisp even at low resolutions.
