Kay Tout Moune (pronounced Kai toot moon) is a week-long unconference that examines the global movements of people with their ideas, knowledge, visionary contemplations, and social praxis through a postmigrant perspective.

A cross-disciplinary group of scholars will gather for a day of knowledge exchange on the theme of Postmigration and Creative Practices in the Haitian Diaspora of the Americas. Presenters include Dr. April Mayes, historian and haitianist, Associate Dean at Pomona College in California; Dr. Ronald Charles, professor of religion studies at the University of Toronto; and Dr. Carlo Charles, sociology professor at the University of Windsor. Introduction 

A cross-disciplinary group of scholars will gather for a day of knowledge exchange on the theme of Postmigration and Creative Practices in the Haitian Diaspora of the Americas. The day starts with us learning about the concept of postmigration as an intervention in migrations and diaspora studies while taking the migration of Haitians through the Americas as a Case study.  Presenters include Dr. April Mayes from the Pomona College, Dr. Carlo Charles from the University of Windsor, and Dr. Ronald Charles from University of Toronto. 

 Postmigration: a Critical Intervention

In the past five decades, Haitian migration and transnational mobility have intensified in the Caribbean and the Americas. According to recent statistics, approximately four million people have fled the multidimensional vulnerability of life in Haiti to resettle as immigrants or seek asylum in various countries in the region. While many Haitians have faced hardship on their treacherous migration journey to find a 'safe haven' across the Americas, their post-migration experiences in their receiving societies are shaped by significant inequality along the lines of race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexuality, class, and geopolitics. At the same time, Haitians have found creative ways to fight for their dignity while remaining connected to their homeland and other Haitian diasporic communities despite their predicament. Drawing from my 10 years of empirical research on Haiti and its diaspora, my presentation/workshop will explore the conditions that shape Haitian migration .

Religion matters. Movements matter. One cannot divorce the two. In this presentation I will show how religion develops through navigating spaces and how spaces change as they change religious communities.

Navigating Spaces from a religious perspective

 In 2016 thousands of Haitians left Brazil in the hopes of reaching the United States. They trekked through northern South America, through Central America, and arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border where many crossed at border towns such as Mexicali, Nogales, and Tijuana only to be imprisoned in a network of “detention centers,” many of them privately owned. Haitians in mobility continue to make their way to the Mexico-U.S. border, but now many come directly from Haiti, having paid thousands of dollars to guides, coyotes or, in the language of state regimes, human traffickers. In their work journalists, advocates, and academics have used various categories to characterize Haitians, either as migrants, environmental refugees, or big and little diaspora. Haitians resist certain terms because of their negative connotations; moreover, one category, environmental refugee,  is not (yet) recognized in international law.
