This in-person event is designed to give you an understanding of modern methods of genetic engineering, with 3 separate event comprised of different techniques.Dates: Wednesday Evening, April 10, 2024Time: 6:30 PM – 9:00 PMLocation: DIYBIOTO within HACKLAB.to, 1677 St.Clair West, Toronto, Ontario.During this course, we will be performing PCR, using standard PCR as well as real-time PCR. In this course, we cover a sampler of molecular biology techniques including real-time PCR, quick methods of DNA isolation, gel electrophoresis. Participants will work with safe laboratory materials. You will leave with a theoretical and practical understanding of how real-time PCR works, a technique invented by Kary Mullis. Real-time PCR was a method crucial to infection monitoring during the last pandemic, but can be used for many purposes, including genotyping, expression analysis. We supply all the materials and equipment.This is a class open to the general public - no previous biotechnology experience required. Whether you’re a student, a professional branching out or brushing up skills, or simply curious about molecular biology, this event is perfect for you.Your hosts:Danny Chan received his MSc in microbiology during the course of his PhD candidacy in S.aureus infectious disease models using skin organoids. He has been a research technician for many years in multiple fields including cellulostic ethanol production, protein crystallography, prefrontal cortex development and heat shock proteins. He also worked as a medical editor, fact checking pharmaceutical ads in an agency. The common set of skills underlying his practice are molecular biology, non-hierarchical community participation, and scientific inquiry which he is committed to employ in support of radical communities rooted in justice and scholarship. To these ends he is a board member at <a href="https://biotechwithoutborders.org/" title="https://biotechwithoutborders.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Biotech Without Borders</a> (BwoB), a <a href="https://ronininstitute.org/" title="https://ronininstitute.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Ronin Institute</a> scholar, a host of an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@Defectivebrayne" title="https://www.youtube.com/@Defectivebrayne" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">online microbiology journal club</a>, as well as a member of the <a href="https://freerads.org/" title="https://freerads.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Free Rads</a>, and <a href="https://translatescience.org/" title="https://translatescience.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Translate Science</a>.
