Nova Scotian social workers are invited to prepare for the NSCSW annual conference in May 2024 (Celebrating Courage).

Truth & reconciliation

Members of the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers are required to complete annual professional development, which must include training or activities related to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's calls for action.

First voices speak to us with the authority of lived experience.Uncle Angaangaq Angakkorsuaq, a Kalaallit Elder and storyteller, has shared several times his grandmother's teaching that he must learn to "Listen, listen, and listen again. Only then can you tell a living story."Here in Nova Scotia, Dr. Fyre Jean Graveline, RSW, has written and taught extensively about learning from first voices, exploring both theory and practice. Fyre asks: "What do We mean to Speak with.in our First Voices, and how can We practice Presence, to Open more fully to receive Messages from the Hearts of First Voice peoples?"As we prepare for the <a href="https://nscswconference.org" title="https://nscswconference.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Celebrating Courage</a> conference, we invite our members to join us and Fyre online. Let's begin to rethink our understanding of how to listen and practice social work with more recognition of the interweave of intersectionalities, and in ways that are safer and more culturally specific.

<h3>About our speaker</h3>Dr. Fyre Jean Graveline is a two-spirited resilient survivor, a Métis Grandmother, healer, heARTist, activist, and educator.Fyre specialises in creating a sustainable expressive arts healing practice through an Indigenous, eco-arts-based lens.Working in education and social work for over forty years, she/they have consistently challenged individuals and organisations to examine their oppressive, eurocentric, patriarchal attitudes and practices.Fyre is the author of <a href="https://fernwoodpublishing.ca/book/circleworks" title="https://fernwoodpublishing.ca/book/circleworks" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Circle Works: Transforming Eurocentric Consciousness</a> (Fernwood 1998) and <a href="https://fernwoodpublishing.ca/book/healing-wounded-hearts" title="https://fernwoodpublishing.ca/book/healing-wounded-hearts" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Healing Wounded Hearts</a> (Fernwood 2005). <blockquote>Rooted in Identity. <h3>Conference</h3>Detailed information about the NSCSW's annual conference can be found at <a href="https://nscswconference.org" title="https://nscswconference.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">nscswconference.org</a>. The 2024 conference is a decentralized hybrid event on May 24-25; participants can join online, or in-person at one of five conference hubs across Nova Scotia. Virtual tickets are available until the day of the conference, but in-person conference tickets must be purchased by May 10. <h3>Eligibility</h3>There are no prerequisites for this session. You'll need a device that can use <a href="https://zoom.us/test" title="https://zoom.us/test" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Zoom</a>, and a reasonably reliable internet connection. There are two ticket classes:<h4>NSCSW members</h4>All active, associate, retired associate, and student members of the <a href="https://nscsw.org" title="https://nscsw.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Nova Scotia College of Social Workers</a> are welcome to attend; our professional development programming is part of our member services funded by <a href="https://issuu.com/nscsw/docs/connection_spring2023_webfinal/42" title="https://issuu.com/nscsw/docs/connection_spring2023_webfinal/42" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">annual registration fees</a><h4>Partners</h4>We are proud to be part of the <a href="https://www.casw-acts.ca/en/members/am-i-member#provincinces-and-territories" title="https://www.casw-acts.ca/en/members/am-i-member#provincinces-and-territories" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Canadian Association of Social Workers</a>, the <a href="https://ccswr-ccorts.ca" title="https://ccswr-ccorts.ca" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Canadian Council of Social Work Regulators</a>, and the <a href="https://www.nsrhpn.ca/member-listing" title="https://www.nsrhpn.ca/member-listing" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Nova Scotia Regulated Health Professions Network</a>. Community members enrolled in any of our partners' member organizations are eligible to purchase a partner ticket; just let us know which one you're part of when you sign up. <h3>Professional development tracking</h3>For members of NSCSW, participating in this event is eligible to fulfill the <a href="https://nscsw.org/practice/professional-development-standards/#pdMandated" title="https://nscsw.org/practice/professional-development-standards/#pdMandated" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">mandated requirements</a> for all social workers in Nova Scotia to complete annual for annual professional development activities related to fulfilling the Truth &amp; Reconciliation Commission's calls to action .
