How companies and innovators are bringing technologies and process workflows to add new value to waste wood and create new products for the market.We are back with our first online-based event since the times of COVID when TWIG events were hosted completely online. We held 19 events online over two years where we hosted a featured guest and invited them to tell their story and share the why and how behind what they do. We have been exploring ways to bring this event back, and we are excited to host a group presenting from south of the border who are developing partnerships with BC-based companies.<a href="https://urbanjacks.ca/" title="https://urbanjacks.ca/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Urban Jacks</a> is a wood-based startup in Vancouver, that harvests and diverts secondary wood material giving it a new purpose. Their primary product is finger-joined lumber, which after processing is straighter and stronger than standard SPF and dimensional lumber. We met the Urban Jacks crew in their early days when they were doing some testing at UBC CAWP, and became regulars at our Wood-First-Wednesday. They recently worked with the Emily Carr Industrial Design program, supplying 3rd year students with materials for their projects.We met Urban Machine through Urban Jacks, and we figured it would be fun to collaborate on event to share the latest innovations in the re-claimed lumber world and host a conversation around the future of the Industry<a href="https://urbanmachine.build/" title="https://urbanmachine.build/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Urban Machine </a>is a robotics company specializing in construction wood waste management. Using AI, camera vision, and robotics, The Machine efficiently removes metal fasteners from wood waste, reclaiming it as premium lumber for reuse in new projects. Recently Urban Machine signed an LOI with VEMA Deconstruction in Vancouver, who will receive a wood-reclaiming robot for their operations in BC.During this online presentation, co-founder and CEO Eric Law will explain how the process reduces environmental impact and maximizes reclaimed material value. Automation keeps reclaimed lumber prices accessible, promoting sustainability and circularity.
