Vicarious trauma & secondary stress

Members of the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers are required to complete annual professional development, which must include training or activities related to preventing and managing vicarious trauma and secondary stress.

Unconscious bias and vicarious trauma experienced by social workers can erode ethical practice if these factors are not addressed with careful intent.This lunch and learn is part of an ongoing series of professional development activities designed to help us begin to reflect upon the concept of “safe” social work practice, and how our own intersectional positionality and experiences can impact how we practice. How do we bring ourselves into our work and how does our work affect us? How do we support those who are different from us, and how do we reflect upon these experiences in ways that help us to continue to grow in our own learning and unlearning journey?This first panel in this series brings together panelists connected to the Middle East, whether they have lived in the region themselves or are connected through culture and descent. Future sessions will focus on 2SLGBTQIA+ perspectives, IBPOC perspectives, and the experience of life upheaval from personal or family crises (e.g. divorce, illness).For an introduction to the theory underpinning this series, see our <a href="https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/861014065247" title="https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/861014065247" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Navigating our way to safe(R) social work practice</a> webinar on April 30 (which will be recorded for people who cannot attend live). <h3>Eligibility</h3>There are no prerequisites for this session. You'll need a device that can use <a href="https://zoom.us/test" title="https://zoom.us/test" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Zoom</a>, and a reasonably reliable internet connection. Community members enrolled in any of our partners' member organizations are eligible to purchase a partner ticket; just let us know which one you're part of when you sign up. <h3>Professional development tracking</h3>For members of NSCSW, participating in this series is eligible towards the mandatory annual requirement professional development that supports prevention/mitigation of vicarious trauma and secondary stress.
