This quarterly series invites Nova Scotian social workers to develop their professional ethics in a collaborative space.

Social work ethics

Members of the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers are required to complete annual professional development, which must include training related to social work ethics.

<p><strong><strong></strong></strong>The Nova Scotia College of Social Workers (NSCSW) hosts a quarterly ethics café for our members. This series of lunch and learn sessions offers social workers an opportunity to reflect upon the complex ethical issues that may be involved in determining the best course of action for themselves to follow.</p><p>In this session please join Dr. Marika Warren from the Nova Scotia Health Ethics Network and a social worker, a psychologist, a doctor and a community mental health worker, as they discuss conflicting understandings of “duty to report” and how to navigate these complex issues to ensure safe(R) care.</p><p><br></p><h3>Eligibility</h3><p>There are no prerequisites for this session. You'll need a device that can use <a href="https://zoom.us/test" title="https://zoom.us/test" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Zoom</a>, and a reasonably reliable internet connection. There are two ticket classes:</p><h4>NSCSW members</h4><p>All active, associate, retired associate, and student members of the <a href="https://nscsw.org" title="https://nscsw.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Nova Scotia College of Social Workers</a> are welcome to attend; our professional development programming is part of our member services funded by <a href="https://issuu.com/nscsw/docs/connection_spring2023_webfinal/42" title="https://issuu.com/nscsw/docs/connection_spring2023_webfinal/42" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">annual registration fees</a></p><h4>Partners</h4><p>We are proud to be part of the <a href="https://www.casw-acts.ca/en/members/am-i-member#provincinces-and-territories" title="https://www.casw-acts.ca/en/members/am-i-member#provincinces-and-territories" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Canadian Association of Social Workers</a>, the <a href="https://ccswr-ccorts.ca" title="https://ccswr-ccorts.ca" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Canadian Council of Social Work Regulators</a>, and the <a href="https://www.nsrhpn.ca/member-listing" title="https://www.nsrhpn.ca/member-listing" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Nova Scotia Regulated Health Professions Network</a>. Community members enrolled in any of our partners' member organizations are eligible to purchase a partner ticket; just let us know which one you're part of when you sign up.</p><p><br></p><h3>Professional development tracking</h3><p>For members of NSCSW, participating in this event is eligible to fulfill the mandatory requirement for annual<strong><strong> training in social work ethics</strong></strong>. Members who have already completed that requirement for this year can track it as <strong><strong>formal professional development</strong></strong> instead, and use the registration confirmation email or PDF ticket as a verification document.</p><p>Participants may also choose to follow up after the session to participate in advocacy related to the session's content; such advocacy activities are eligible for the <a href="https://nscsw.org/practice/professional-development-standards/#pdMandated" title="https://nscsw.org/practice/professional-development-standards/#pdMandated" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">mandated requirements</a> for all social workers in Nova Scotia to complete annual <strong><strong>training or activities related to the pursuit of social justice</strong></strong>.</p><p>Visit <a href="https://nscsw.org/pd" title="https://nscsw.org/pd" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">nscsw.org/pd</a> for more information about the updated professional development requirements for Nova Scotia social workers.</p><p><br></p><h3>Questions?</h3><p>If you have questions about our professional development program content, please contact the College's professional practice and advocacy consultant, Naj Siritsky, at nsiritsky@nscsw.org.
