Join us for an exciting and informative hands-on biotechnology lab course focusing on PCR!

Dates: Saturday afternoon, June 23, 2024 Time: 1-5 PM Location: DIYBIOTO within <a href="https://hacklab.to/" title="https://hacklab.to/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">HACKLAB.to</a>, 1677 St.Clair West, Toronto, Ontario. During this one afternoon course we will be performing PCR, using standard PCR as well as real-time PCR. In this course, we cover a sampler of molecular biology techniques including real-time PCR, quick methods of DNA isolation, gel electrophoresis. Participants will work with safe laboratory materials. You will leave with a theoretical and practical understanding of PCR, a technique invented by Kary Mullis. We will also perform Real-time PCR, a method crucial to the infection monitoring of the last pandemic, but can be used for many purposes, including genotyping and expression analysis. We supply all the materials and equipment. This will include PCR primers for either 16rRNA (bacterial), meat species or specific human genes - it's your choice if you want to explore microbiome, human genotyping of your own (which will be your information and confidential) or identify whether a meat specimen has lamb, pork, beef or chicken in it. Other primers for PCR detection are possible, but early registration and notification of your interests is required. This is a class open to the general public - no previous biotechnology experience required. Whether you’re a student, a professional branching out or brushing up skills, or simply curious about molecular biology, this event is perfect for you.
