This panel features radical visionaries and anti-prison activists, <a href="https://twitter.com/yafajarrar?lang=en" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>Yafa Jarrar</strong></a> (via Skype) and <a href="http:// https://devynspringer.journoportfolio.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>Devyn Springer </strong></a>discussing the global prison-industrial complex, the prison abolition movement, political prisoners, and the ongoing illegal Israeli blockade of Gaza in Palestine. </p><p>Following the panel, local organizers, artists, scholars and educators will respond to what the panellists have offered in relation to their work. The respondents are: <strong>Dr. Kevin Edmonds </strong>on behalf of the Caribbean Solidarity Network, <strong>Jaroslava Avila Montenegro</strong> from the Women’s Coordinating Committee for a Free Wallmapu, and Palestinian artist and activist <strong>Rana Nazzal</strong>.</p><p></p><h3>About the panel speakers</h3><p><a href="https://twitter.com/yafajarrar?lang=en" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>Yafa Jarrar</strong></a> is a Palestinian labour and human rights lawyer living in Ottawa. Yafa was born in Jerusalem and raised in Ramallah, Palestine. She moved to Canada in 2003 to attend Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific. Yafa has been involved with the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement in Palestine and internationally since the BDS call in 2005. Both of Yafa&#x27;s parents have been political prisoners in Israeli prisons. Yafa’s mother and human rights defender, Khalida Jarrar, is currently a political prisoner in Damon Israeli prison.</p><p><a href="https://devynspringer.journoportfolio.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>Devyn Springer</strong></a> is an Atlanta-based cultural worker, independent researcher, and published author of <em>Grayish-Black: poetry from the ribs</em>. Devyn’s work focuses on the African diaspora, history, political art, pedagogy, violence, and the space where these things come together. They also host <a href="https://groundings.simplecast.fm/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><em>Groundings</em></a>, a podcast where &quot;organizing, theory, and history come in contact with dialogue, experience, and storytelling,&quot; and is a member of the Walter Rodney Foundation. </p><h3></h3><h3>About Israeli Apartheid Week 2020: <em>United Against Racism</em></h3><p>The Boycott, Divestment &amp; Sanctions (BDS) movement at the University of Toronto welcomes you to join us for the 16th annual Israeli Apartheid Week 2020 under the banner of <em>United Against Racism</em>. On <strong>Tuesday, March 17 at 6:30pm</strong>, join us for a viewing of the documentary, <a href="https://gazafightsforfreedom.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong><em>Gaza Fights for Freedom</em></strong></a> featuring the groundbreaking director,<a href="https://www.facebook.com/JournalistAbbyMartin/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> <strong>Abby Martin </strong></a><strong>(</strong>via skype). </p><p>IAW 2020 calls on progressive movements, groups and organizations fighting all forms of racism, racial discrimination, marginalization and oppression to join forces. It advocates for Palestinian rights in the context of global struggles against racial oppression. It is more urgent than ever to join together our struggles for freedom, justice, equality and dignity and to recognize that Israel’s far-right regime is a key partner of authoritarian and even genocidal regimes worldwide, supplying them with deadly military and security technologies. </p><p>The BDS movement at UofT dedicates IAW2020 with profound love and admiration to the people of Gaza, Palestine for their courage and steadfastness (summoud, الصمود). IAW2020 at UofT interrupts the prevalent silence on the Israeli blockade that has turned this tiny seaside strip into the world’s largest and most populated open-air prison.
