A smart move: Artificial intelligence & strategy games

Two computing scientists discuss the application of artificial intelligence on games of strategy.
The release of two new books demonstrates the University of Alberta's dominance in the world of artificial intelligence and computer gaming. Join us for presentations by the authors, Ryan Hayward and Jonathan Schaeffer, followed by a panel discussion.

Jonathan Schaeffer will discuss "<A HREF="https://www.russell-enterprises.com/russell-enterprises/man-vs-machinebrchallenging-human-supremacy-at-chess" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Man vs Machine: Challenging Human Supremacy at Chess</A>," detailing the development of chess-bots from 1770 to today.
Ryan Hayward will discuss "<A HREF="https://www.crcpress.com/Hex-Inside-and-Out-The-Full-Story/Hayward-Toft/p/book/9780367144227" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Hex, the Full Story</A>," which tells how the game came out of World War II and was popularized by Piet Hein, John Nash, Martin Gardner, and a hockey-playing physicist.
Schaeffer and Hayward will then be joined in a panel discussion with Martin Müller and Michael Buro.

Each is a professor in the UAlberta Department of Computing Science.
<A HREF="https://www.ualberta.ca/science/about-us/contact-us/faculty-directory/jonathan-schaeffer" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jonathan Schaeffer</A> is the founder of the <A HREF="https://webdocs.cs.ualberta.ca/~games/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">UAlberta GAMES research group</A>. His checkers-bot Chinook was the first computer program to win a world title in a competition against humans. His research team later solved checkers.
<A HREF="https://www.ualberta.ca/science/about-us/contact-us/faculty-directory/ryan-hayward" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Ryan Hayward</A> is a long-time Hex fan. His research team built MoHex, the world's strongest Hex-bot, and has solved Hex on all boards up to size 10x10.
<A HREF="https://www.ualberta.ca/science/about-us/contact-us/faculty-directory/martin-mueller" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Martin Müller</A> is an expert on computer Go. His open-source Go-bot Fuego was the first to win an even 9x9 Go game against a top-ranked human. Martin co-supervised (with Rich Sutton) PhD student David Silver and (with Ryan Hayward) post-doctoral fellow Aja Huang, the lead developers of <A HREF="https://www.ualberta.ca/science/science-news/2016/january/deep-minds-master-the-game-of-go" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">AlphaGo</A>.
<A HREF="https://www.ualberta.ca/science/about-us/contact-us/faculty-directory/michael-buro" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Michael Buro</A> is an expert on real-time strategy game-bots and author of the champion Othello-bot Logistello and world's strongest skat-bot Kermit.
