For those in need of a kidney or liver transplant, living organ donation may offer a shorter pathway to better health - providing faster access to transplant and a quicker recovery. But there are not enough living donors to meet the need.The Centre for Living Organ Donation was created by UHN Transplant (now the Ajmera Transplant Centre) in 2018 to improve access to living organ donation for people who need a life-saving kidney or liver transplant and those who want to give a transformative gift of life.We raise awareness, provide support, promote research and offer hope to thousands of people who are waiting for a kidney or liver transplant - and everyone who wants to be part of their future.We are located at Toronto General Hospital, a member of the University Health Network (UHN), also home to Toronto Western Hospital, the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, and The Michener Institute of Education at UHN. Improving Access to Liver Transplantation in Diverse Communities

Over the past two decades the incidence and prevalence of cirrhosis has increased substantially, reaching approximately 1% of the population of Ontario and possibly Canada. This number is projected to increase significantly over the next 20 years as the twin epidemics of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and alcohol-related disease (ALD) grow.Despite increasing need for liver transplantation, access to liver transplant or living donation is not equal across various ethnoracial communities. Many patients with liver disease do not receive a timely diagnosis or a referral for liver transplantation. Others will never receive a live-saving transplantation due to lack of an available organ or an appropriate match. Many are not aware or unsure about living organ donation or transplantation.Very little research has been undertaken on liver disease, organ donation and liver transplantation in immigrant and ethno-racial minority communities in Canada and elsewhere. The ACCESS LT project will document the prevalence of liver disease, barriers to access to care, and ways to improve living liver donation and transplantation rates in immigrant and ethnic and racial minority communities. Phase 1 of the project, funded by CDTRP, will undertake a comprehensive epidemiological study of liver disease and living liver donation and transplantation in immigrant and ethno-racial communities in Ontario/Canada. This webinar will present preliminary data from the newly launched ACCESS LT project along with the experiences of patients and practitioners serving the diverse Chinese and South Asian communities in Ontario.

<h2>Speakers</h2>Jennifer Flemming MDDr Jennifer Flemming joined the Faculty of Medicine at Queen’s University in 2014 as a member of the Division of Gastroenterology. She completed medical school at Dalhousie University (2006) and completed Internal Medicine (2009) and Gastroenterology training (2011) at Queen’s University. She then spent two years at the University of California San Francisco completing subspecialty training in Hepatology and Liver Transplantation as well as obtaining her Master’s Degree (MAS) in Advanced Clinical Research.Dr. Flemming is a Southeastern Ontario Academic Medical Association (SEAMO) Clinician Scientist with 70% of her time protected for research activity. She is a member of the Cancer Care and Epidemiology (CCE) group at the Cancer Research Institute at Queen’s University with a cross appointment to the Department of Public Health Sciences. Her health services research program focuses on the epidemiology and natural history of cirrhosis, hepatitis C and primary liver cancers.Natasha Chandok MD, MPH, FRCP(C)Dr. Chandok completed her MD at the University of Ottawa and residency training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at McMaster University. Thereafter, she completed a Hepatology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, followed by a Master’s in Public Health at the Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Chandok’s clinical career started as an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Western Ontario until 2013 when she established a Hepatology practice at William Osler Health System. Now an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Western and Clinical Affiliate at the University of Manitoba, Dr. Chandok continues activities in research and education, having established a successful e-learning app, LearnTheLiver. She has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles to date and supervises and lectures medical students and residents of McMaster University. She has been instrumental in establishing a Hepatology Program at Osler. Colina Yim RN, MNColina Yim is a nurse practitioner at the Toronto Centre for Liver Disease where she has worked for three decades. She obtained her Master’s in Nursing from the University of Toronto and has a current adjunct appointment with the University. Her clinical practice focus is viral hepatitis and decompensated liver disease.Her professional activities have been notable, particularly as the founder of the Canadian Association of Hepatology Nurses (CAHN), past-chair of the National Education Committee of the Canadian Liver Foundation, past co-chair of the Canadian Nurses Association Special Hepatitis C Project, and the founder of Hepatitis B peer support group. In 2012, she received Canada’s esteemed Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of her contributions in the liver community.Colina has been an AASLD associate member since 2003. She has contributed to the work of many committees including Practice Guidelines Committee, Hepatology Associate Education and Abstract Review Committees, and more recently the Hepatology Associate SIG.Her research interests include stigma and the socio-cultural behavior in patients with viral hepatitis. She has published in peer-reviewed journals and co-authored a book on Hepatitis C. She believes nurses will continue to play an important role in the field of hepatology as it advances.Nazia Selzner MD, PhDDr. Nazia Selzner is a Transplant Hepatologist and Medical Director of Live Donor Liver Transplantation in the Multi-Organ Transplant Program, University Health Network, and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto. Dr. Nazia Selzner is a Scientist at the Institute for Medical Science (IMS) as well as at the Toronto General Research Institute (TGRI). Dr. Selzner graduated from Medical School at the University of Paris VII, France and completed her Gastroenterology training in 1998. She completed her PhD in 2003 at the University of Paris VII, France, after four years of research fellowship at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC and at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. Her research interest is in the mechanism of ischemia/reperfusion injury of the liver. Her interest in ischemia and reperfusion injury started during her research fellowship at Duke University where she studied mechanisms of reperfusion injury in diseased livers, such as steatotic or aging livers. She continued her research in this field in Toronto. Dr. Selzner has recently received the Canadian Society of Transplantation Research Excellence Award.
