This exhibition by Shalom Chianu and Felicia Ukiri emphasizes the return to and embracing of traditional hairstyles and moving towards decolonial initiatives. For both artists, that looks like deconstructing ways of thinking and asking why traditions are shunned in favour of Western ways of thinking- a dialogue that continues to be relevant for Black folks. Using hair as a tool for storytelling, this exhibition is about reconnection to the roots that carry history, culture, identity and artistry.Shalom Chianu is a Nigerian lens-based artist creating work exploring themes of identity, both on an individual and community level, as well as her own interiority.Felicia Ukiri, CEO of Beautybylicia, is a versatile makeup artist, hairstylist and creative who specializes in all things beauty, bringing a deep passion and artistry to her work across Bridal, Editorial, TV, Film, and runway.This exhibition is curated by Percy Eriamiator of Art Show Hub- an arts and community collective in Toronto focused on experiencing and appreciating art in real time.
