'BEING+' Opening Reception (Virtual)

Toronto Outdoor Art Fair (TOAF) is Canada’s leading outdoor and online art fair. Established in 1961 to connect Canadian artists directly to the public, TOAF showcases 400+ emerging and established visual artists, including painters, photographers, sculptors and artists working in ceramics, textiles, jewellery and more. The event brings together 150,000 art lovers and enthusiasts who spend over 2 million dollars on art during the Fair. This free public event takes place every July - rain or shine - at Nathan Phillips Square in the heart of downtown Toronto. The Fair offers something for everyone: talks, tours, digital studio visits, curated collections, kids workshops, live painting, dance, music, art installations and food and drink experiences. Since 2020, TOAF’s online Fair has become Canada's fastest-growing e-commerce and discovery platform for artists across Canada.

'BEING+' is an exhibition of six emerging artists curated by Abisola Oni with the mentorship of Flavio Belli.

Join us on Saturday, January 15th, 3PM on Zoom to celebrate the opening of &#x27;BEING+&#x27;, an online exhibition curated by Abisola Oni with the mentorship of Flavio Belli. Register directly on Zoom in advance: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86865578891&#x27;BEING+&#x27; explores the nexus between the experience of the individual and the objective social and cultural forces that bind this experience. Simone De Beauvoir recognizes the ambiguity of the human experience which suggests we are both subjects who act, and objects who are acted upon, constrained by our physical limits, social barriers, and the political powers of others (The Ethics of Ambiguity, pp.7-34). &#x27;BEING+&#x27; similarly considers the variable states of selfhood and complicates the rigidity of subject-object relations. &#x27;BEING+&#x27; consists of abstract, figurative, installation, and collage artworks by Biba Esaad, Noah Lima, Miles Ingrassia, Roxana Parsa, Michelle Cieloszczyk, and Michelle Rodrigues. The artists examine the experience of being in relation to social and cultural phenomena by expressing diverse subjectivities through formal elements and subject matter. Collectively, &#x27;BEING+&#x27; considers nuances in the socio-cultural influences on gender, power relations, the racialized body, and the role of place and kinship in the conceptualization of identity.
