CWA Canadais the country's only all media union, with 6,000 members at media, news and entertainment outlets from coast to coast. Our largest local, theCanadian Media Guild, represents members at media outlets such as VICE Canada, BuzzFeed, CBC, TVO, APTN, The Canadian Press, and Thomson Reuters.Cultural Workers Organizeis a collaborative research project investigatinglabourconditions and collective organizing in the arts, media, and cultural industries, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.Game Workers Unite Toronto is the local chapter ofa broad-reaching organization that seeks to connect pro-union activists, exploited workers, and allies across disciplines, classes, and countries in the name of building a unionized game industry.Toronto Media Arts Centreis a new permanent home for Toronto’s media arts organizations, and an accessible public space for art, creation and collaboration in the Queen West Triangle. TMAC integrates creation, production, presentation, education, conservation and dissemination practices and with a focus on community building and inclusivity.

MEDIA MIXER - NAVIGATING A CAREER AND MAKING CHANGES IN THE MEDIA 
From the “appropriation prize” fiasco, to the editorial decision to protect the identity of a woman who used a racial slur, these incidents over the last few months have highlighted the need for more discussion on how to diversify the voices, stories and editorial control in the Canadian media.   Join us for a FREE mixer and discussion that will bring together journalists and freelancers to tackle these issues. Drawing on personal experience, they’ll share advice for navigating a career path in the industry, while also changing it from within. They’ll discuss strategies for making and claiming spaces for black, brown and indigenous voices; equity policies and practices that news organizations should be implementing; and how we can better support each other in building sustainable careers. There will be time before and after the panel to meet other freelancers, media workers and students, and to chat with featured mentors about building careers and dealing with challenges of working in the media. Snacks and drinks will be provided! 
FEATURING: Alicia Elliot - a Tuscarora writer living in Brantford, Ontario with her husband and daughter. Her writing has been published by The Malahat Review, The Butter, Room, Grain, The New Quarterly, CBC, Globe and Mail, Vice, Macleans, Maisonneuve and Today's Parent. She's currently Associate Nonfiction Editor at Little Fiction | Big Truths, and a consulting editor with The New Quarterly. Her essay, "A Mind Spread Out on the Ground" won a National Magazine Award. She's currently working on a book of short stories and a book of essays.
Vicky Mochama - is the national columnist for Metro News Canada. She writes about race, gender, politics, culture and anything else she can get her brain around. Before joining Metro, Vicky wrote for Vice, The Globe and Mail and Hazlitt.  Vicky is the host of Safe Space along with Ishmael Daro, a fun weekly political chat podcast featuring some of Canada's most interesting minds. 
MODERATOR: Fatima Syed - a staff reporter at the Toronto Star, who's journalism superpower is her long excel list of stories she still hasn't written. She was previously at The Walrus and Global News, and has written for This Magazine and Spacing. While at the Ryerson Review of Journalism in 2016, she created a digital project on diversity in media which won a Digital Publishing Award. She's also the author of a chapter in the book "Subdivided: City Building in an Age of Hyper-diversity."
