The City of Mississauga is pleased to be working with the Share the Road Cycling Coalition to host a Bicycle Friendly Communities Workshop

About this Event

In this interactive, full-day Workshop on Thursday, March 7, 2019 from 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. attendees will:

  • Gain an understanding of the Bicycle Friendly Communities process.
  • Explore Mississauga’s existing cycling assets and programs related to education, encouragement, enforcement, and evaluation & planning.
  • Learn about what communities similar to Mississauga have done to make themselves better places for people on bikes.
  • Create a short-term, action-oriented work plan to help Mississauga become more bicycle friendly.
  • Build new connections with other stakeholders to ensure that the resulting work plan becomes a reality.

9:30 a.m. Networking and Registration

10:00 a.m. Introductions and Workshop Overview

10:15 a.m. Taking Stock

Attendees will help to identify the various programs and projects that are already taking place within Mississauga that are moving the community towards a more Bicycle Friendly future. Gaps in programming will be identified, as well as opportunities to strengthen existing programs through new partnerships.

11:00 a.m. Visioning

Attendees will explore medium and short term goals for cycling in their community. This facilitated session is based on the Five E’s framework of the Bicycle Friendly Communities program and will see participants collaborate to identify priority actions to build a more bicycle friendly community in 5 years. The Five E’s are: Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Enforcement and Evaluation & Planning. For the purpose of Mississauga’s workshop, the Engineering section will not be discussed due to the recent completion of the City’s Cycling Master Plan, with its extensive focus on new infrastructure projects.

12:00 p.m. Working Lunch

In this session, hear inspiration from communities that are similar to Mississauga from around North America and learn how they are leveraging the power of the bicycle to transform their communities into more complete, sustainable and enjoyable communities.

1:00 p.m. Project Building

This session will help to identify the ways in which stakeholders in Mississauga can work together to achieve their shared goal of building bicycle friendly communities.
