Board Panel Perspectives is a unique opportunity to hear directly from current board, committee and association members.

<p><strong>This session will explore:</strong></p><ul><li>Who joins a non-profit board or association</li><li>What it’s like to be responsible for a non-profit or association</li><li>How you can find a leadership position that fits your goals</li></ul><p><strong>Board Panel Perspectives</strong> brings together a group of active board, committee and association members. Through a Q&amp;A format, panelists will discuss their path to this leadership role, and the current realities of supporting large and small groups and non-profits across Toronto. Participants of this session will gain diverse and meaningful insights to help inform their own community engagement goals, along with the opportunity to ask questions and get advice.</p><p></p><p><em>Note:</em> Participation in &quot;Becoming a Board Member&quot; is recommended prior to attending this session. While it&#x27;s not required, it can be helpful to provide deeper insight and context into board governance. You can join the self-directed online learning <a href="https://learnvt.ca/enrol/index.php?id=14" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Becoming a Board Member course on LearnVT.ca</a> anytime ($35).</p><p></p><p><strong>Registration &amp; Cancellation Policy</strong></p><p>Registrations are accepted at the discretion of Volunteer Toronto. No refunds will be issued for cancellations received within 48 hours of an event. Registration can be transferred to another member of your organization.</p><p>Written notice must be received more than 48 hours prior to the event date in order to receive a refund. Please send your written cancellation to sfeilchenfeld@volunteertoronto.ca. </p>

<h2>Meet the Panelists</h2><h3>Sheliza Jamal, Executive Director, Curated Leadership Inc. &amp; Board Member, Harvard Graduate School of Education Alumni Council, Harvard Alumni Entrepreneurs Council Canada, and WorkInCulture</h3><p>Sheliza Jamal is a graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is the founder and Executive Director of Curated Leadership Inc., a coaching firm that fosters partnerships with leadership teams, non-profits, and corporations to develop their knowledge in the areas of equity and diversity to build inclusive communities. As an Equity and Inclusion facilitator and Ontario certified educator, Sheliza brings over a decade of experience using an anti-racist lens in designing curriculum and implementing training and development programs aimed at addressing inequitable outcomes for underserved communities.  Sheliza currently serves as a board member of the Harvard Graduate School of Education Alumni Council and is a Founding Member of the Harvard Alumni Entrepreneurs Council Canada.  She is also a board member for WorkInCulture. Sheliza has a background in arts education and often uses theatre-based techniques to develop embodied empathy to engage participants in dialogue about oppression. She uses a calling in approach to bring people together to listen and learn with empathy. Sheliza is currently completing her PhD at OISE, University of Toronto in the Department of Social Justice Education with a research focus on race bias in teacher education programs.</p><h3>Jane Garthson, Garthson Leadership Centre &amp; Secretary, Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust</h3><p>For over 30 years, Jane Garthson has worked to create better community impact through values-based leadership and intentional governance at not-for-profits. She has served on eight quite diverse boards, including as Chair and as Commissioner of a regulatory agency. After being in three Interim CEO/Executive Director roles, she now acts as a Peer Mentor to new Interim Executives as well as new board chairs and executive directors. She still consults in charity and association governance, particularly board decision-making, leadership transitions and CEO succession planning. Jane is committed to continued learning, graduating from the Interim Executives Academy in 2020. Jane is currently Secretary and past chair of the Governance Committee at the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust. </p><h3>Donnett Bailey, President, Toronto Association of Volunteer Administration (TAVA)</h3><p>Donnett Bailey is a non-profit, social work and volunteer engagement professional, with over 18 years of experience promoting community health and supporting diverse volunteers and non-profit service users nationally, provincially and locally. Donnett currently works, and engages volunteers, at Yonge Street Mission. She is also an avid volunteer, currently serving as the President of TAVA’s (Toronto Administration for Volunteer Administration) volunteer executive board.</p>
