Border Free Bees Workshop

Border Free Beesis a long-term public art initiative headed by Dr. Cameron Cartiere, Professor in the Faculty of Culture + Community at Emily Carr University of Art + Design and Nancy Holmes, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at The University of British Columbia, Okanagan, in collaboration with numerous strategic partners. The initiative’s mission is to raise awareness of the plight of wild pollinators, empower communities to actively engage in solutions for habitat loss, and transform under-utilized urban sites into aesthetically pleasing and scientifically viable pollinator pastures.

9:00 - 9:30 Introductions. With Nancy Holmes and Cameron Cartiere, and around the room.
9:30 - 10:30 Digital Map Project, led by Fabian Cid.
10:30 - Coffee Break
10:45 - 11:30 Buzz talk 1: Jaymie Johnson leads us in a weaving experience and talks about Kelowna and Terra Nova projects
11:30 - 12:00 Buzz Talk 2: FRONDA - our Mexican partners talk about art, community and ecology projects they organize and their bee plans
12:00 - 1:00 - Lunch
1:00 - 1:30 Buzz Talk 3: Courtney Gilbert of Sun Valley Idaho talks about the projects underway in Sun Valley – art and pollinators, community engagement and the future of their pasture
1:30 - 2:30 Table 1 – Proposal for discussion: brainstorming a method/protocol for bee-naming. Table 2 – Proposal for discussion: brainstorming a community art project around pollinators for a new community: case study for Nelson BC.  
2:30 - Coffee Break
2:45- 3:15 Buzz talk 4: Brian Campbell talk - final inspiration
3:15 - 3:45 Pollinating table regroup and present to group
3:45 - 4:00 Summaries, last words. Reminder to bring material for Digital Map for Sunday morning.
