Café Philo: Work

Café Philo Waterloo Region

Café Philo creates space for philosophical discussion to promote openness, tolerance, and critical thought within the community.

Kitchener Public Library - Meeting Room E

Most of us work; few of us have the time to consider what our work means for ourselves or for our communities. Work surrounds us and often consumes us. The workweek is rife with its own realities: work-life balance, work from home, work ethic, team work, work environments... Work hasn't always been as it is now, nor will it always be this way. What then is it all for?At our next café philo, we want to slow down and consider the fruits of our labour in the context of our lives. We have invited two speakers, Sean Campbell and Allie Libertini, who will share about their own philosophies of work before we invite attendees to do the same. Join us on Tuesday, November 29th at 7:00 p.m. at the Central KPL in Meeting Room E. This is a free event. Masks are encouraged, but not required. Sean Campbell works as the Executive Director of Union Co-operative -- Union Co-operative is working to buy residential & commercial properties in Waterloo Region for permanent affordability through community ownership. He is the Principal of Scaled Purpose, a management consultancy for non-profits, charities, and co-operatives. Sean is an instructor at Wilfrid Laurier University, and the Treasurer at the construction company Fourth Pig Worker Co-operativeAllie Libertini attended Conestoga College's Community Integration through Co-operative Education program where she was a recipient of a Premier's Award for recent college graduates. During college, she began volunteering at the Working Centre to learn about food preparation and customer service, which prepared her for her current work at the Chopped Leaf. She is an avid athlete who plays basketball, hockey, power-lifting, CrossFit, Track and Field, boxing, and skiing. Allie has also travelled to Austria as a part of Team Canada for the Special Olympics Winter World Games. The café will be moderated by Shannon Lodoen. Shannon Lodoen is a PhD candidate and sessional instructor in English at the University of Waterloo. Her doctoral research examines smartphones as persuasive technologies, asking how these devices impact users’ understandings of themselves, their relationships, and the world around them. She holds a master’s degree from Western University’s Centre for the Study of Theory and Criticism. Shannon is the founder and chair of a departmental lecture series at UW English, and she also works at the Centre for Teaching Excellence. This event is made possible through a community grant from the City of Kitchener.
