Canada's Mining Activities Abroad

Why Should I Care? is a grassroots, community based organization committed to engaging citizens on topics that concern them. Our mission is to provide an accessible forum where Canadians can discuss, debate, and learn about political issues that affect us all.  By focusing on topics and not ideologies, we break the taboo of discussing politics at the dinner table.Over beer and food we learn, share, experience, and take action as both Canadians, and members of a broader community.

Why Should I Care?

"Canadian mining companies are among the worst human rights offenders on the planet."  - <A HREF="https://nowtoronto.com/news/canadian-mining-is-murder/" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="NOW Magazine article" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">NOW Magazine</A>, 2016
Canadian mining companies have repeatedly faced allegations of environmental damage and human rights abuses, including child labour, slavery, and mass murder. Are Canadians aware of what's happening?
In 2010, MP John McKay tabled private member's Bill C-300, also known as the Responsible Mining Act, calling for stricter oversight of Canadian mining companies abroad. The Bill would have withdrawn government funding and diplomatic support for companies found to be abusing human rights or violating international environmental norms in developing countries. The legislation was defeated 140 to 134 in the House of Commons in October 2010.
What's going on? How is it possible for Canadian companies to be implicated in such activities without triggering more scrutiny at home?
For this discussion, we'll be joined by panellists: - Sakura Saunders, member of the Mining Injustice Solidarity Network and co-founder of Protest Barrick - Claire Lehan, who worked closely with MP John McKay on crafting Bill C-300

As always, the event is free, you just have to pay for anything you order. We'll be at our Uptown location, the Wallace Gastropub.
