Celebrating Solstice - Outdoor Family Event

Summer solstice is a significant day for many cultures worldwide, and for the planet itself! Come celebrate with us outside and learn about solstice with this family-friendly summer kick-off.   In honour of the longest day of the year, renowned indigenous storytellers Dallas Yellowfly and Alysha Collie will present “How the Raven Stole the Sun” on our patio, we’ll also have sun craft stations, and we’ll do some sun gazing with our astronomer at the solar scope in the observatory.

<h3>REGISTRATION:</h3>Select from one of three time slots (10:00am, 11:45am or 2:30pm) to claim your spot. By registering for a time slot you are permitted to bring a group with a maximum of 5 people to the event.We will be hosting 8 groups during each time slot and it will take approximately 80 minutes to complete all three activities.   Tickets are by donation, with a recommended value of $10 per person in each group. This event is recommended ages 8+ . We will be hosting this event outdoors rain or shine, so be sure to dress for the weather!

<h3>ACTIVITIES: </h3>“How the Raven Stole the Sun” storytelling - 40 mins (patio)  “How the Raven Stole the Sun” is a light-hearted and interactive performance that explores the holistic values, traditions, and culture of Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast. The presentation focuses on the importance of having respect for the environment, Indigenous oral traditions.Dallas Yellowfly is a member of the Siksika First Nation, who was born and raised on Sto:lo territory practicing coastal cultures. After completing a Bachelors of Arts degree in Sociology/Anthropology, he pursued both stand up comedy and music professionally. He recorded two rock/metal albums, toured Canada as a professional guitar player, and had his comedy featured on CBC radio.   Alysha Collie is a member of the Soowahlie First Nation and has recently completed a Bachelor of Science degree with a Biology Major and Visual Arts Minor. While at university, Alysha spent her time as an Indigenous Peer Mentor where she helped her peers with their culturally sensitive needs and provided academic support. During her university career she helped plan a Reconciliation Shakespeare Garden, the first of its kind, for the campus by providing Indigenous perspective and scientific knowledge.  Sun Craft Activity - 20 mins (outside of the observatory) Join us outside on the lawn for a fun Sun Print or Sun Dial craft.  Solar Viewing - 20 mins (in the observatory) Join us in the observatory, and check out a live feed of the surface of the sun from our telescope.
