Who's in the Room? 

We will set the tone for our gathering by examining the barriers and opportunities of the system to advance community composting. First we will do an external assessment of opportunities to make progress, then we will look at internal opportunities within our organizations, and finally we will come up with an action plan that highlights opportunities for collaboration between communities. Participants will be given an exercise to complete two weeks before the event and will use their research to participate in this session.

Workshop 1: Shifting the System

Participants will review the various types of permits, identify which permit to use based on specific operations, and work with a template to create an Operations Plan to submit with their application.

Workshop 2: Notifications and Operating Permits

Dave is working with Old Massett Village Council on their organics diversion
project, Ḵwiyée tla láasaang (Making the Soil Well), utilizing an Earth Flow in-
vessel composting system by Green Mountain Technologies.
With a substantial background in horticulture, long experience in vegetable
gardening in different regions on the West Coast of BC, and a very strong
appreciation of the value of organic materials currently lost in the solid waste
stream, Dave has researched and practiced various methods of organics diversion
and composting ranging from single household to community scale projects.
In 2013, he assisted in the development and operations of a composting facility for
the Heiltsuk Nation in Bella Bella where we implemented a collection strategy and
composting operations utilizing a ‘bunker’ system. Since relocation to Haida
Gwaii, he has been involved in food security/sovereinty discussions and brings both passion and knowledge to his work.

Case Study: Community Composting in Masset, BC

Raised in the countryside of the Cariboo Chilcotin by a couple Swiss immigrant hillbillies is where Oliver has his roots.  His schooling is comprised of his many adventures and travels throughout the world.  Always ready to give a big wave and thanks to the local garbage truck driver, Oliver is very passionate about managing our waste, or better yet not creating it in the first place.  Currently he is working in his home town of Williams Lake helping the community with various recycling projects and is also working at the Potato House Project with compost and sustainable living education.

Case Study: Community Composting in Williams Lake

Laurie Gallant is the founding Executive Director for MASH, a first generation small-scale farmer, a seasoned project manager and grant writer, and a semi-retired environmental planner specializing in municipal solid waste management and air quality. With MASH she has been leading a regional effort to strengthen our local food system and to date has introduced community-scale apple pressing, community-scale composting, community food preserving classes, and annual community forums to share and collect stories to facilitate learning and integration of local traditions and knowledge. She has helped communities across BC to design and implement strategies to meet environmental targets by introducing recycling and User Pay garbage collection services, piloting a Woodstove Exchange Program for BC, delivering education programs for backyard composting and reviewing and creating policies and regulations to support these initiatives.

Case Study: Community Composting in New Hazelton

The 8th Annual General Meeting for MASH will take place at 5:30 pm followed by some free time before dinner at 7 pm. The dinner will feature locally produced ingredients prepared by chef Hannah Stockner of Kispiox River Lodge. Live music in the lounge will start at 8:00 pm.

AGM and Gala Dinner 

Participants will prepare samples for shipping, complete paperwork, identify the delivery system for their community, learn how to interpret test results, and identify corrective actions for parameters not meeting acceptable OMMR standards.

Day 2 - Workshop 3: Testing your finished compost and interpreting results

We will review our findings from Day 1 and complete our Action Plan.

Day 2 - Workshop 4: Shifting the System Part 2

We will visit the MASH Community Composting Hub and a choice of other projects in the area. A brown bag lunch will be provided.
