Video Pool Media Arts Centre (VP) is Manitoba’s only artist-run centre dedicated to the exploration of technology-based art. We inspire curiosity and creative expression through technological empowerment and open exploration, cultivating experimental artistic practices and accessibility to technology through presentation, production, preservation, and education. As well as disseminating the largest collection of prairie video art in Canada to the international stage, VP highlights work at the intersection of technology and art by local and international artists in our Poolside Gallery, and The Output, our performance and rehearsal venue.

Computer as an Instrument - Performance Systems for Sound Art

Instructor: Ali Khan (aka. Yoyu)In the hands of an artist, the computer is the most expressive and innovative instrument for sound and music. The magic lies in building performance systems that enable real-time creative expression with defined limits. In this workshop, Ali will explore computer-based strategies for sound synthesis, performance systems, algorithmic techniques, and connecting “outside the box” to hardware and visual art. Ali will share his favorite techniques, built in Reaktor, MAX/MSP, SuperCollider, and Processing.js Ali Khan is a long-time electronic music producer from the Canadian Prairies. His ambient music project, Yoyu, is celebrated internationally with releases on Dewtone, Archives, and personal record label, No More Words. Ali records his live performances with a process of deep listening and improvisation using an advanced collection of custom electronic instruments, largely inspired by traditional Eastern spiritual music.
