Overview

In Constructed Language, Kathy Witdouck explores colour, geometry, and rhythm as a visual vocabulary.

In Constructed Language, Kathy Witdouck explores colour, geometry, and rhythm as a visual vocabulary. Using the structure of quilt-making as both framework and medium, these works investigate how simple elements – line, shape, repetition and contrast – can form systems of meaning.

Grids fracture, circles expand, arrows suggest movement and stripes create cadence across the surface. Precision piecing provides the architecture, while dense quilting introduces another layer of drawing, texture and motion. Together these elements produce compositions that balance control with improvisation.

The quilts function as abstract maps of colour and form. Shapes echo across works, reappearing in altered configurations that suggest a grammar of marks and gestures. Each piece contributes to a larger conversation about pattern, structure and the expressive potential of textiles.

Through this body of work, Witdouck invites viewers to read cloth as language – where colour carries emotion, geometry creates order, and stitched lines record the movement of the maker’s hand.
