Contemporary Dance Masterclass with GALLIM

Contemporary Dance Masterclass with GALLIM

Studio 4 AthleticsVictoria, BC
Saturday, Mar 7 from 11 am to 12:30 pm
Overview

Join us for a free 90-minute contemporary masterclass with GALLIM dancer Briana Del Mundo.

This masterclass blends GALLIM Methods with repertory from choreographer Andrea Miller’s work, including phrase material from pieces featured in BODIES OF MATTER.

GALLIM Methods is a dynamic movement practice that invites dancers to tune into how the body thinks, feels, and moves using both physical awareness and imagination. Through guided improvisation, movement explorations, and clear physical tasks, dancers will explore range, coordination, texture, musicality, and spatial awareness, while building strength, stamina, and expressive clarity.

The class moves between exploration and choreography, giving dancers the chance to learn and embody phrase work from GALLIM repertory. Expect to sweat, move fast, slow things down, take risks, and discover new ways of accessing power, nuance, and freedom in your movement. This class is ideal for dancers who are curious, physically engaged, and ready to dive into the creative process.

About the Instructor

Briana Del Mundo (Dancer) (she/her) is of Filipino descent and a native of Calgary, Canada. She obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance at the Juilliard School and soon after joined Ballet BC as an Emerging Artist under the direction of Medhi Walerski for their 2023/24 season. During her collegiate years, she performed works by Ohad Naharin, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, and Jermaine Spivey and Spenser Theberge. Beyond school, her tenure with Ballet BC brought her to explore and perform works by Johan Inger, William Forsythe, Imre & Marne van Opstal, Shahar Binyamini, Crystal Pite, and David Raymond and Tiffany Tregarthen of Out Innerspace. Briana also developed an interest in fashion during her time at Juilliard, where she worked as a co-stylist and collaborated through movement direction with Brooklyn-based fashion designer, Delfina Balda. Now based in New York, Briana is eager to immerse herself in its vibrant cultural landscape and is delighted to be a GALLIM artist.

GALLIM arrives at the Royal Theatre on March 6 and 7 as part of Dance Victoria’s season, bringing their Victoria premiere in a striking mixed program led by visionary choreographer Andrea Miller—the first choreographer to be named Artist in Residence at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Internationally recognized for work that is both physically daring and emotionally resonant, GALLIM showcases Miller’s remarkable range and ingenuity. The program includes state, created in collaboration with Kyle Abraham and A.I.M; Bruce, a playful and high-energy work set to the rhythms of Balkan Beat Box and Joanna Newsom; No Ordinary Love, a soul-stirring duet set to the iconic music of Sade; the raw and unconventional SAMA; and DESDE, an intimate series of duets set to the hypnotic sounds of Nicolas Jaar.
