Using art making to express and process big feelings 

This workshop will explore expressive art making with whatever materials you have on hand. Together we will explore how making art can help us manage emotions or develop new insights. Amy will guide us in using tools such as line, shape, colour, space and symbol to convey thoughts and feelings in visual form, finding new ways to externalize and communicate one’s inner experience. We will be guided through a series of exercises, including a final expressive drawing and will be encouraged to use some of the tools discussed in the workshop. Everyone will have the option to share and discuss their art works, but this is entirely optional. Please have on hand some blank paper and any drawing materials you have on hand such as pencil crayons, markers, pastels or paintsWhat we’ll explore:<ul><li>An introductory presentation on art therapy and expressive art making </li><li>New tools to try at home such as using shape, line and colour to express thoughts and feelings </li><li>Learn about the different functions of art therapy and what materials/exercises are suggested for different mental health goals </li><li>An opportunity to do some guided expressive art exercises in session and option to share with other group members </li></ul><ul></ul>About Our Facilitator: Amy Mackenzie MA, CCC, RCT Amy Mackenzie is a professional art therapist and Registered Counselling Therapist. She graduated from Concordia University with a Master’s in Creative Arts Therapies in 2011. She has worked in private practice and at a community counselling agency as both an art therapist and mental health counsellor. She has also developed and facilitated several art therapy groups, workshops and classes for places such as the Eating Disorders program at the Abbie J. Lane Hospital, Nova Scotia Early Psychosis program and NSCAD University, department of Extended Studies. She is currently in private practice offering a sliding scale model. She is a recreational artist and is currently working on a kid’s book.
