Welcome to Curious Brews

Speaker: Dr. Stefan Cartledge
Dr. Cartledge has been inspired by Star Trek since watching reruns as a kid. Realizing he wasn't quite in shape to be an astronaut, he turned his dreams toward studying stars and planets from afar. Over his career, he has studied and worked at six universities, used professional observing facilities across three continents, and hosted public observing sessions in both Canada and the U.S. Since 2009, Stefan has been sharing his passion for the cosmos as an Associate Professor and Chair of Physical Sciences at MacEwan University, where he teaches astronomy and physics while conducting independent research.
Lecture: Where Are The Planets?
Before 1995, every lush alien world in Star Trek or desolate desert in Star Wars was purely reasonable speculation. Today, astronomers have the tools to actually peer into the cosmos, detect exoplanets orbiting distant stars, and uncover what these alien worlds are truly like. In this lecture, Dr. Stefan Cartledge will pull back the curtain on how modern astronomy discovers these hidden planets, what our latest discoveries reveal, and why the sheer vastness of the universe makes the odds of Earth being the only planet where life could develop seem vanishingly small. Join us for an exciting journey beyond our solar system and discover how science fiction is becoming scientific fact!
Community Drive: Partnering with Wings: Safe Housing & Support

🍻 A Few Housekeeping Notes
We want everyone to have a fantastic time at Curious Brews! To help things run smoothly, here are some things to know:
Getting Here & Getting In
- Parking: Complimentary parking is available in the MKT lot. When you arrive, please provide your license plate number to the MKT reception desk to register your vehicle. There is also street parking available nearby.
- Accessibility: We’ll be gathering in the upstairs lounge, which is accessible only by a flight of stairs. If you have any questions, mobility concerns, or need assistance getting settled, please don't hesitate to reach out to us!
- Food & Drink Orders: Our venue partner is hosting us in a full house! Please be patient with the restaurant team when ordering food and drinks during the social hour. Ordering early during the 6:00 PM tp 6:45 PM window helps ensure your order arrives before the presentation starts.
Creating a Great Experience
- Mutual Respect: Our speakers generously volunteer their time and expertise. We ask that all interactions and questions remain kind, curious, and respectful.
- Sharing the Floor: We love a lively Q&A! To make sure we hear from as many voices as possible, please keep your questions brief. Just raise your hand and we'll get to you!
- Can’t Make It? No worries at all, life happens! Since our events consistently sell out, please let us know if you can’t attend so we can pass your ticket along to someone on our waiting list.
The Most Important Rule: Have Fun!
Curious Brews is all about meeting new people and sharing big ideas. After the lecture, we’ll transition into relaxed networking. We hope you’ll stay a while, grab another round, and introduce yourself to someone new!
