A Ramadan Community Kitchen with Embark Sustainability

Student Union Building (SUB)

Community Kitchens are back in person for this iftar feast! Join Embark Sustainability and the SFSS Women’s Centre for a guided discussion on culture and food, diasporas, and how to make space for yourself outside of your homeland.This iftar will specifically focus on Somali heritage and Ramadan customs for Somali communities across the world. Ramadan is a special time for community-building and gathering, so join us to learn more about cultural connection. This event is open to ALL members of the SFU community!ABOUT THE FACILITATORAlea Mohamed (she/her) is the child of Somali immigrants who first landed as refugees in so-called Canada in the early 1990s and made a home for themselves on Treaty 8 territory on the traditional lands of the Dane-zaa peoples of the Doig River First Nation, Blueberry River First Nation, and Halfway River First Nation. The need for community and the search for opportunities brought her family to the Lower Mainland in 2008 and she has since resided on the unceded, stolen, and traditional lands of the Semihamoo, Katzie, Qayqayt, kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem), and Tsawwassen nations. She is in her last year as an International Studies major here at SFU, minoring in Development and Sustainability and is very passionate about creating spaces where BIPOC youth, specifically Black women, can feel comfortable getting involved with climate action initiatives.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThis event takes place on the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Nations. EVENT ACCESSIBILITYEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students, as well as Embark Associate Members.This event will be held indoors at the Embark Studio, room #1310 of the Student Union Building (SUB), SFU Burnaby. The SUB is located south of Freedom Square between the Diamond Family Auditorium (DFA) and the Academic Quadrangle (AQ).The Embark Studio is:<ul><li>wheelchair accessible</li><li>welcomes all gender identities and expressions</li><li>a tree nut and peanut-free zone</li><li>a scent-free zone</li><li>located near wheelchair accessible and gender-neutral restrooms</li><li>provides access to a quiet space for personal meditation, reflection, or prayers</li></ul>We aim to make our events accessible to as many of our community members as possible.
