Data Exploration Workshop Using R

Rotman Research Institute

Workshop Overview:This is an introductory workshop on using R to explore your data. It will primarily cover three topics: 1) file management and organization for programming, 2) basics of coding in R using tidyverse functions, and 3) data visualization using ggplot. This workshop will be tailored towards people with little to no prior experience with R; however, individuals at all levels are welcome! Attendees will be given access to workshop materials in advance of the session so they can easily follow along.Workshop Objectives:The workshop is designed to help attendees:

Become familiar with more efficient file management systems (e.g., using nested folders)

Learn the basics of tidyverse functions (e.g., data cleaning and transformation)

Use ggplot to visualize your data (e.g., scatterplots)

Attendee Requirements:The aim of this hands-on tutorial is for attendees to gain a better understanding of programming in R and apply these techniques to their own projects. The workshop will be interactive and “live-coded"; therefore, all attendees will need to have R (https://www.r-project.org/) and R Studio (https://www.rstudio.com/) installed so they can follow along. The tidyverse package should be installed (see this link for more information). An instructional email will be sent out by the workshop instructors closer to the date of the workshop and will include a detailed description of how to download R as well as any additional packages that might be needed.Workshop Instructor:1. Anisha Khosla, PhD student at the University of Toronto and RRI at BaycrestAnisha is a third-year PhD Student at the University of Toronto, co-supervised by Dr. Jennifer Ryan and Dr. Morris Moscovitch. Her research focuses on the link between visual exploration and spatial navigation. Broadly, Anisha is interested in investigating how spatial maps are formed and how they are impaired in aging and dementia. She completed her MA in Psychology from University of Toronto in 2019 and BSc in Psychology and Neuroscience from McMaster University in 2018.2. Nichole Bouffard, PhD student at the University of Toronto and RRI at BaycrestNichole is a third-year PhD student at UofT, co-supervised by Dr. Morgan Barense and Dr. Morris Moscovitch. Before arriving in Toronto, she graduated from UC Davis with a B.S. in Psychology in 2015. After graduating, she worked as a lab manager in Dr. Charan Ranganath’s Dynamic Memory Lab and used neuroimaging techniques, like fMRI, to study brain regions in the MTL and their functions as they relate to episodic memory. As a graduate student in the Barense/Moscovitch labs her work focuses on how features like space and time act to structure our memories and what role they play during retrieval. She finished her MA in Psychology at UofT.3. Stephanie Simpson, PhD student at the University of Toronto and RRI at BaycrestStephanie is a third-year PhD student in Dr. Brian Levine’s lab at the Rotman Research Institute. She is an NSERC-Postgraduate Scholarship-Doctoral award holder and was a standing committee member of the Research Training Centre for over two years. Broadly, Stephanie is interested in studying the neural correlates of episodic memory retrieval in humans. One aspect of her doctoral work applies EEG techniques to investigate how the neurophysiological hallmarks of overnight sleep impact our ability to recall real-world events over time.
