Event InformationFull of creativity and curiosity, youths have the potential to make meaningful contributions to the design processes of communities and cities. In a multicultural hub like Toronto, there is a greater importance to engage young people to foster a sense of belonging and create inclusive and vibrant urban spaces, particularly for those from underrepresented families and communities.Join us for a panel discussion that explores the potential of public art and creative mediums (i.e., murals, public art, installations, and design) in urban design and their capacity to engage and empower youth!SpeakersSpeakers include Ima Esin from<a href="https://stepspublicart.org/" title="https://stepspublicart.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> STEPS Public Art</a>, Jess Misak from <a href="https://thebentway.ca/" title="https://thebentway.ca/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Bentway</a>, Ernestine Aying from <a href="https://www.instagram.com/cornercommons/" title="https://www.instagram.com/cornercommons/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Corner Commons</a>, and Sariena Luy from <a href="https://flauntit.ca/" title="https://flauntit.ca/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Flaunt It</a>.Ima Esin (she/her) is an urban wanderer and collector of stories. She leads the development and delivery of STEPS’ community-engaged cultural planning services and supports community consultation across the portfolio. She’s passionate about urban spaces that reflect the histories, cultures, and experiences of local communities.⁠⁠Jess Misak (they/them) lives, learns, and makes in Toronto/Tkaronto Canada. Jess holds membership with the OAA as an Intern Architect and is a considerate architectural designer, local organizer, and urban garden enthusiast. Their work visits themes of queer public space, housing justice, and communal pleasure.⁠⁠Ernestine Aying (she/her) has a background in Environmental Design and has been involved in public space projects for almost 10 years. She currently works on a temporary public space project called Corner Commons in the Jane-Finch neighborhood. The project activates a local parking lot in the neighbourhood into a vibrant and welcoming public space for the community to use all summer long. ⁠Sariena Luy (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artistic activist specializing in film, photography, event curation and communications design. She is the founder of the youth-led organization called the "Flaunt It Movement," which fosters self-love and highly-esteemed representation for women through creative, community projects.⁠Hear from this diverse group of experts about compelling case studies and best practices that have effectively used art and creativity to embed diverse youth voices in community building!Photo Journal CompetitionShow your creativity and tell your story through our Photo Journal competition, "Your Neighbourhood through Your Eyes", for a chance to share your stories, be featured in our exhibition, and win a $50 prize!
