Located in the Marpole neighbourhood of Vancouver, Historic Joy Kogawa House is a 1912 heritage house owned by the City of Vancouver as a cultural space to honour the life work and writing of author Joy Kogawa. Today, the property is a unique live/work space for writers, a space for public events, and an ongoing symbol of the racial discrimination experienced by Japanese Canadians as a consequence of the Second World War.

How do perception, memory, imagination, and preconceptions fold into the act of drawing? Visual artist Ed Pien will present a workshop that combines drawing and writing as process to disrupt the conventions of observational drawing.All drawing materials will be provided.To join on Zoom or to request admission as a member or student, please email info@kogawahouse.com.

Ed Pien is a Canadian artist based in Toronto. He has been making art for over 30 years. Born in Taipei, Taiwan, he immigrated to Canada with his family at the age of eleven.Pien has shown extensively, both nationally and internationally, in venues that include the Drawing Centre in New York City; Victoria and Albert Museum in London; Canadian Culture Centre in Paris; Goethe Institute in Berlin; Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in Victoria, BC; Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto; Musée des beaux arts in Montreal; Musée d’art contemporain and OBORO in Montreal; Songzhuang Art Centre in Beijing; and National Art Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.He has participated in the 2000 and 2002 Montreal Biennales; the 18th Edition of the Sydney Biennale; and Oh Canada at MASS MoCA. He also presented work at the 5th Edition of the Moscow Biennale, Beijing International Art Biennale, and Curitiba Biennial in Brazil. His work is collected widely and includes FRAC Lorraine, Metz, France; Art Gallery of Greater Victoria; National Art Gallery of Canada; Art Gallery of Ontario; Musée d’art contemporain de Montreal and Musée des beaux arts, Montreal; Mendel Art Gallery; Weatherspoon Art Museum, University of North Carolina, Greensboro, North Carolina; as well as other institutions and private collections. Ed Pien is living in residence at Historic Joy Kogawa House from August 15 to September 30 while preparing work for the exhibition <a href="https://centrea.org/exhibitions/upcoming/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Ed Pien: Tracing Water</a>, September 16 to November 12, 2022, curated by Henry Heng Lu, at Centre A: Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, 268 Keefer Street, Unit 205, Vancouver. Opening Reception: Friday, September 16, 6 PM to 9 PMEd Pien: Tracing Water presents an extensive assembly of work by Toronto-based artist Ed Pien. Ranging from drawing to lithography to photo digital prints and video, the works span over 20 years and explore and incorporate water in these artistic creations, including the following:<ul><li>Two Worlds comprises 12 drawings excerpted from a large series of narrative-based drawings. This suite of drawings imagines a future where humans battle watery beings to gain domination and control. The war wages on for centuries, and amid destruction, suffering, and death, hybridized part-water and part-humans are born. The epic war finally comes to a halt as the two originating factions can no longer be distinguished.</li><li>The Living Sea is a video of computer-generated images (CGI) commissioned by James Graham of a large body of water rising and falling. The video is projected over crystal gems embedded on the gallery wall that spell out texts written by Merrell-Ann S. Phare in which she imagines herself as the sea and what message she has to offer us.</li><li>Breath, photographs that capture ephemeral drawings made by the artist’s breath in minus 45 degrees condition.</li><li>Ocean Water Drawing, which involves the participation of captured salty ocean water and how it makes and leaves its marks as it intervenes with white ink. The subsequent marks and images made are in direct response to the trace residuals marked up on the surface of the black coloured papers as ocean water makes its inevitable escape.</li></ul>Plus other recent works that delve more deeply into exploring the sentience of water, that water has co-agency, liveliness, and creativity. Water is a material that is highly process-based and plays a significant role in how a drawing can unfold.Please join us!
