Environmental Youth Alliance (EYA) is a Vancouver-based non-profit that empowers youth from equity-seeking communities to become environmental stewards. Our workshops seek to create a greater sense of community through activities designed to learn about and connect with nature.

Strathcona Community Garden

Today, many of us spend 90-95% of our time indoors glued to screens during our active hours, whether for work or leisure. Our hyperconnected world demands our constant shifting attention, breaking our concentration and often triggering imbalances in the nervous system through increasing levels of anxiety and stress. More time spent in nature has been scientifically proven to be highly beneficial for our minds, bodies, and spirits. Eco-mindfulness involves mindful awareness practices set outdoors that help us develop our curiosity, expand our senses, relax and feel grounded. Join EYA staff members Jess Duncan and Maria Paula Serrano for a grounding after-work evening in nature. In this workshop, you will learn about Eco-mindfulness, explore the beautiful Strathcona Community Gardens, engage in meditation and journaling exercises, and take a surprise gift with you to continue your own practice at home!*Note: This event will take place rain or shine so we ask attendees to dress for any weather; if rain falls on the day of the event, we will set up inside the Eco Pavilion in the gardens. About the Facilitators:Jess Duncan (she/her) is a second generation settler who’s ancestors come from England, Scotland, and Trinidad. She grew up on traditional unceded lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ territory and studied Biology and Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria, where she found a love for talking to people about plants and a passion for creating accessible spaces for people to create personal connections with nature. When she isn’t talking about plants, you can find her practicing yoga, reading, riding her bike, knitting, or hiking, snowboarding, and exploring the natural areas of xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ territory.Maria Paula Serrano(she/her) is an Ecuadorian citizen who grew up in the coastal city of Guayaquil. A recent settler in unceded Coast Salish territories, Maria Paula came to Vancouver in 2017 to study a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography, Environment, and Sustainability at the University of British Columbia (UBC). In addition to her Geography studies, she pursued a minor in Creative Writing. Maria Paula is passionate about climate action, communication, community engagement, and enjoys practicing yoga, cooking, dog-watching, and photography in her spare time.
