Education Pathway Planning Program: Workshop for Grade 9 Students

TheCoalition for Alternatives to Streaming in Educationis a diverse group of organizations, community groups, parents, students, educators and individuals who share the common goal of effectively ending the practice of academic streaming in Ontario schools. Over the past six years, we have worked with communities, parents and students to conduct research, support advocacy and raise awareness about the structural inequities of academic streaming.

Welcome to the Education Pathway Planning Program! This series aims to support Hamilton students and families navigate the school system.

T﻿he Education Pathway Planning (EPP) Program is designed to support families and students navigate high school course selection and plan for students&#x27; futures after high school. Our goal is to help students and families become aware of how academic streaming can limit their success at school and create barriers to future opportunities.I﻿n this workshop designed for Grade 9 students, we will discuss:<ul><li>How academic streaming can impact their education;</li><li>What de-streaming is and why it is happening at the Grade 9 level in Ontario; and</li><li>How to choose high-school courses that don&#x27;t limit their opportunities after high school.</li></ul>-﻿ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -J﻿oin us IN-PERSON or ONLINE! If you have any food accommodation requests, please let us know in the registration form.</li></ul><ul><li>I﻿f you require a reimbursement for transit fare or parking, we are able to reimburse up to $6 for each registered participant.</li></ul>Accessibility: The event space is wheelchair accessible, however the door to the building is not automatic. If you use a mobility device, we&#x27;re happy to assist you by holding the door open. The washrooms are accessible and located on the main floor (the same floor where the workshop is taking space). If you need additional accessibility accommodations, please let us know in the registration form.COVID-19: Wearing a mask is not required, but we do encourage attendees to wear one while they are not eating or drinking. Free medical grade masks and hand sanitizer will be available throughout the event.-﻿ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -&quot;Academic streaming&quot; is a process where students are separated into unequal high school course levels (e.g., academic, applied, and locally developed). Many people believe that separating students into different streams will support their unique learning needs, but research shows that academic streaming causes unfair outcomes for students.Students in &quot;lower level&quot; courses are less likely to graduate and less likely go to college or university. Most students who are unfairly placed in &quot;lower level&quot; courses are already facing inequity in the education system .
