Elementary, My Dear Watson: The Basics of Mystery Writing with Catherine Hunter
In this workshop, each participant will plan a mysteryy novel, beginning with the basic elements: drawing a plot outline, creating a hero, and drafting a major scene. Wrtiers of all levels are welcome. Whether you have already written, are in the middle of writing one, or simply curious about how it's done, you should find the exercises in this workshop helpful. We will begin with a brief lecture about the mystery genre, and then we'll work together to generate ideas, using techniques designed to spark inspiration. Participants should be able to come away from this workshop with a sense of the kind of mystery novel they want to write and whether they want to begin or what steps they need to take next. Please bring paper, pens, all your imagination and lots of questions!
 
Catherine Hunter is the author of several works that belong in the mystery genre, including the thriller, The Dead of Midnight and the crime novel Queen of Diamonds. She teaches Creative Writing at the University of Winnipeg.
