Engineering Month Workshop—Introduction to Python

The Saskatoon Engineering Society (SES) has a mandate to advance the engineering profession and related societies by assisting in information exchange between Society members and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS) Council by acting as a local agent and focal point to promote matters pertaining to the education and awareness of the profession.

As computers become increasingly important in our work and daily lives, writing simple scripts becomes increasingly important.

Python has become one of the world's most popular programming languages. It is powerful, flexible, and extremely easy to learn, and has become a favourite for people ranging from computer scientists and data analysts to programming neophytes.Edwin van der Spuy, a Control Systems Analyst at the Canadian Light Source, will present a brief overview of Python. Then a typical "real-world" example will be tackled. No programming experience or preparation is required. If the event indicates it is sold-out. Please register for waitlist.

Edwin's career has included working as a radiation scientist at the South Africa, as a data analysis consultant to BC Hydro, and providing data acquisition support to a mineral processing research group at McGill University. In addition to his controls systems work using EPICS, he is involved in the continuing development of Python based tools used to supply information regarding the control systems and user interfaces.
