The Burnaby Lake Park Association was founded in 1972* and has been an active volunteer organization leading stewardship activities that preserve, restore, and protect Burnaby Lake Regional Park’s ecological integrity. They connect people with nature through habitat restoration and enhancement such as their invasive species removal program Weedbusters and Nestbox Monitoring, education and outreach in the community. The BLPA is an advocate for environmentally responsible management of Burnaby Lake Regional Park to ensure it is a legacy for future generations. We work in conjunction withMetro Vancouver Regional ParksInterpreters to help people discover the great outdoors!The BLPA acknowledges that our work is situated on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Peoples. Be a champion for native plants during the City of Burnaby's Environment Week! Join the Burnaby Lake Park Association "Weedbusters" and like-minded community members who care about the environment. You will get an overview of how to identify and remove invasive English Ivy as well as why the work you do is so important for biodiversity. No experience necesary. Tools, training and refreshments will be provided. This event will be limited to 10 volunteers. The BLPA limits the number of volunteers to ensure adequate distancing and that other COVID-19 safety best practices can be applied. Volunteers are required to bring and wear a mask when physical distancing is not possible, regardless if they are vaccinated or not. Did you know? The BLPA Weedbusters program started in 2004, making it one of the first community groups in the province to engage in this important stewardship activity to help ensure a biodiverse environment. You will get a chance to learn about us and our other activities and volunteering opportunities.When you register, you will need to confirm that:1. You are at least 16 years of age or older (or 12 years of age with an adult with you)2. You have read and understood the BLPA Safety Plan for stewardship activities3. You will not attend if you have arrived from outside of Canada in the last 14 days4. You will not attend if you do not feel well or have been exposed to a confirmed or clinical COVID-19 case in the last 14 days5. You will bring your own mask, water, snacks, pen/pencil to sign any forms if needed, and if you have and prefer to use on your own, work gloves and tools (e.g. clippers) 6. You will provide your email and telephone number in the event that contact tracing is required and handled by the provincial health authority. What to bring checklist:<ul><li>Mask (regardless if you are vaccinated or not)</li><li>Work/gardening gloves if you have them and prefer to use your own. We do not have waterproof gloves, please bring your own if you have them. </li><li>Clothing you don’t mind getting wet, dirty or caught in branches.</li><li>Long sleeves and pants highly recommended; dressing in layers is always good. Bring rain gear and a towel if the weather forecast is for rain.</li><li>Closed toe, sturdy shoes or boots, and if it has been raining, waterproof footwear is always good if the ground is soggy.</li><li>Lots of water and your own snacks and anything for your own comfort and safety, e.g. sunscreen or medication</li><li>Optional: Your own clippers, mallet, binoculars (you never know when there is an opportunity to spot some birds in the park)</li></ul>MEETING LOCATION:Burnaby Lake Nature House - 4519 Piper Avenue. We'll meet out front.Please take note that if the weather is nice, the parking lot can be very busy. You may need to park along Piper Avenue or at Warner Loat Park right off of Winston which is a 450 m/5 minute walk to the Nature House.
