Join us for a two-day Symposium to celebrate the work and achievements of the Vector Institute’s Chief Scientific Advisor, Geoffrey Hinton, who earlier this year received the 2018 ACM A.M. Turing Award alongside Drs. Yoshua Bengio and Yann LeCun for their pioneering work on artificial neural networks.
 
The 2018 ACM A.M. Turing Award is computing’s highest honour and often referred to as the “Nobel Prize” of computer science. 
 
Thanks to Dr. Hinton’s leadership and foresight, the Vector Institute has become a beacon in the global AI community since its launch two years ago. This event will be an opportunity to hear and interact with hundreds of top local and international machine learning researchers and industry leaders at the forefront of AI.

Neal</A> completed his PhD under Dr. Hinton’s supervision in 1994 and introduced a method to estimate the degree of certainty in predictions made by deep learning models. Dr. Neal’s foundational work continues to have a significant influence in the field today. Dr. Neal is Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto.</LI>

<LI>1:30 PM: Research Talk: <A HREF="http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~gdahl/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">George Dahl</A> completed his PhD under Dr. Hinton’s supervision in 2015 and was the first to successfully apply deep learning to speech recognition. Dr. Dahl also led the team that won the Merck challenge to help develop safe and effective medicine by predicting molecular activity. He is currently a research scientist on Google’s Brain team in California.</LI>

Eric joined Google in 2001 and helped grow the company from a Silicon Valley startup to a global leader in technology He served as Google's Chief Executive Officer from 2001-2011, and Executive Chairman 2011-2018, alongside founder Sergey Brin and Larry Page.  Under his leadership, Google dramatically scaled its infrastructure and diversified its product offerings while maintaining a strong culture of innovation. </LI>

<LI>9:30 AM: Research Talk: <A HREF="https://www.salk.edu/scientist/terrence-sejnowski/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Terrence Sejnowski</A>’s work is grounded in neuroscience and he was one of the earliest influencers and collaborators in Geoffrey Hinton’s career. Dr. Sejnowski is now President of the NeurIPS Foundation Board, overseeing the largest machine learning conference in the world. He is Professor and Head of the Computational Neurobiology Laboratory at the Salk Institute in California and an Advisor in the Learning in Machines & Brains program at CIFAR.</LI>

<LI>11:45 AM: Research Talk: <A HREF="https://staff.fnwi.uva.nl/m.welling/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Max Welling</A> was a Postdoctoral Fellow under Geoffrey Hinton’s supervision until 2003. His work is prolific and diverse, including advancements that teach deep learning models how to categorize information effectively to improve speed and accuracy of predictions. Dr. Welling is a research chair in machine learning at the University of Amsterdam and VP Technologies at Qualcomm. Max Welling is also a Fellow in the Learning in Machines & Brains program at CIFAR.</LI>

<LI>1:00 PM: Research Talk: <A HREF="https://www.cs.toronto.edu/~ilya/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Ilya Sutskever</A>, received a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Toronto under the supervision of Geoffrey Hinton. He was a co-founder of DNNResearch which was acquired by Google, and he later was a research scientist at Google Brain. He is a co-founder of OpenAI, where he currently serves as Chief Scientist. Ilya has made several major contributions to deep learning.</LI>

<LI>3:00 PM: Panel discussion: Deep Learning in Industry moderated by <A HREF="https://www.gwtaylor.ca/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Graham Taylor</A>, Associate Professor of Engineering at the University of Guelph, a CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholar, an Academic Director of NextAI, and a member of the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence. His research aims to discover new algorithms and architectures for deep learning: the automatic construction of hierarchical algorithms from high-dimensional, unstructured data. He is especially interested in time series, having applied his work to better understand human and animal behaviour, environmental data (climate or agricultural), audio (music or speech) and financial time series. His work also intersects high performance computing, investigating better ways to leverage hardware accelerators to cope with the challenges of large-scale machine learning. He co-organizes the annual CIFAR Deep Learning Summer School, and has trained more than 50 students and staff members on AI-related projects.</LI>

<LI><A HREF="https://www.borealisai.com/en/team/foteini-agrafioti/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Foteini Agrafioti</A>, Chief Science Officer at RBC and head of Borealis AI. She is responsible for RBC’s intellectual property portfolio in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Prior to joining Borealis AI, Foteini founded and served as Chief Technology Officer at Nymi, a biometrics security company and maker of the Nymi wristband.</LI>
<LI><A HREF="https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew13brown/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Andrew Brown</A>, Andrew Brown is the Senior Director of Data Science and AI Research at CIBC, in CIBC’s Chief Analytics Office. He received his PhD in computer science from the University of Toronto under the direction of Geoffrey Hinton, and spent time doing research at the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit, University College London. Since joining CIBC, he has worked in a variety of roles in Risk Management, Treasury and Analytics, applying statistical and quantitative modelling methods to problems in consumer behaviour, hedge optimization, ALM and currently leads an enterprise data science team. </LI>
<LI><A HREF="http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~urtasun/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Raquel Urtasun</A>, Chief Scientist for Uber ATG and the Head of Uber ATG Toronto. She is also a Professor at the University of Toronto, a Canada Research Chair in Machine Learning and Computer Vision and a co-founder of the Vector Institute for AI. She received her Ph.D. from the Ecole Polytechnique Federal de Lausanne (EPFL) in 2006 and did her postdoc at MIT and UC Berkeley. She is a recipient of an NSERC EWR Steacie Award, an NVIDIA Pioneers of AI Award, a Ministry of Education and Innovation Early Researcher Award, three Google Faculty Research Awards, an Amazon Faculty Research Award, a Connaught New Researcher Award, a Fallona Family Research Award and two Best Paper Runner up Prize awarded CVPR in 2013 and 2017. She was also named Chatelaine 2018 Woman of the year, and 2018 Toronto’s top influencers by Adweek magazine. </LI>
