The University of Alberta in partnership with the Aga Khan Museum and the Aga Khan Council for Edmonton is pleased to present a special lecture by Islamic geometric design expert Eric Broug. 
Geometric compositions do not easily reveal how they are made; the outcome is visible but not the creative process that led to it. Patterns that appear in buildings, ceramic tiles, quran pages all have a story to tell. In this lecture, Eric Broug will examine the creative process of Islamic geometric design from a craftsman’s point of view. Using images of some of the  greatest mastepieces of Islamic art and architecture, Eric Broug will give an insight into the basic principles of this design tradition.
Author and designer Eric Broug has taught numerous workshops on Islamic geometric design, and will be demonstrating how the rules and design principles of this design tradition enabled craftsmen to make beautiful and complex compositions.

Eric Broug holds a Masters degree in the history of Islamic art and architecture from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, United Kingdom. He is the Principal of Broug Ateliers for Islamic Architecture, Arts and Crafts in Yorkshire, which creates contemporary Islamic art. He is the author of Islamic Geometric Patterns and Islamic Geometric Design.
