About the Speaker: Dr. Michael Mazourek, Associate Professor, Plant Breeding and Genetics, Cornell UniversityDr. Michael Mazourek is a renowned plant breeder, geneticist, and fellow seed enthusiast specializing in cucurbit crops (cucumbers, melons, squash, and pumpkins) at Cornell University. His work focuses on breeding varieties that are not only high-yielding but also adapted to diverse climates and resistant to diseases and pests, making them well-suited for farmers working in northern regions and/or under organic conditions.Dr. Mazourek’s innovations have helped reshape how cucurbits are bred for both flavour and resilience. His breeding programs emphasize traits such as disease resistance (including to powdery mildew and downy mildew), cold tolerance, and pest management, along with improving the quality of crops through better flavour and texture. With a commitment to sustainability and farmer-focused solutions, Dr. Mazourek collaborates with growers to ensure his work addresses real-world challenges, and his efforts have paved the way for more adaptive, resilient, and flavourful cucurbit crops for local food systems.
